|
|
The ex-girlfriend's little brother used my mailing address. He figured I'd be coming down and I did too, so he shipped a couple pairs of shoes and some clothing/accessories he bought online to my house, so I could bring it with me.
Well, as she's my ex, I won't be going there for awhile probably, and want him to have his things. Two pairs of shoes, a belt, and a few pairs of pants or shirts (I haven't checked what's in the packages.)
Should I be concerned about the package getting there? Do I send by USPS? UPS? DHL? FedEx? How should I get it there? I'd like to put it all in one box tomorrow and get it shipped... any recommendations?

If you want to be safe, ship it by DHL, Fedex, etc. It doesn't sound like anything there will be slapped with duty, so not much reason to have it held hostage at customs. |

Ive seen packages slapped with duty, especially new things and if the recipient can't afford to bail it out, it's a loss. My recommendation is if you can find someone trustworthy travelling to Mexico, then send it along with them and have them mail or ship inside the country from wherever they land. There are loads of forums for various Mexican destinations (try Yahoo Groups or the Lake Chapala forum, even better) as this is the time of year where many people are crossing for the Mexican sun. Put a post up and see if you can snag someone from your area or close, going to Mexico. I know people who do this all the time to get things back and forth. Even RV'er forums would work. |

The fat man's offer is the best option, especially since we are talking shoes.
Mexico has strick tariffs on shoes, trying to protect it's own fledging shoe industry. It is very likely that footware shipped no matter my what means will either never get there or arrive with duty more than the value of the shoes due on it. Once they are in the country, gringogordo can ship them without that problem. |

I buy shoes off amazon on average once a year. They get shipped to me by regular mail (not courier). I've been asked to pay duty a couple of times. The last time (about 2 months ago), I had to pay 160 pesos for a pair of shoes that cost 89 USD. The time before that my package was delivered to me duty-free, but the "shoes" (flipflops) cost about 20 USD. Anyway, the point is, I haven't had anything go missing using regular mail... but this is a small town:-)
Since his former cuado is online, I think the OP should check with him about the best shipping method to wherever he is. One time my mum sent me some boooks with DHL, and I had to travel to the state capital (2.5 hrs away) to get them.... so now I advise my friends to use FedEx, since they have an agent in my town (Multipack). Check with the ex's brother to see what the situation is there. |

I forgot to check Dave's today.
And... I didn't think about it...
I just said ... F it. Sent it via UPS, spent 154 dollars. Frankly, I just wanted to get him his things.
Appreciate all your help. Hopefully I'll get down to Mexico and teach this fall. I need a change in latitude... Snowboarding's great... but...

I know I should be leaving this climate.
I got a verse but can't rhyme it.
I gotta go where it's warm.
Boat drinks.
Waitress, I need two more boat drinks.
Then I'm headin south 'fore my dream shrinks.
I gotta go where it's warm.
I gotta go where it's warm.
I gotta go where it's warm.
I gotta go where there ain't any snow,
where there ain't any blow,
'cause my fin sinks so low.
I gotta go where it's warm. |

So... along this thread of shipping...
I'm planning on coming down this summer and packing the essential clothes and things I need to start out. I was planning on pre-packing a box of my winter clothes, etc. that my parents could ship to where ever I end up.
As long as it's old clothes then, no extra fees for it to come across the border?
And 150 bucks *ouch* to ship a box of clothes??? |

It is my understanding that you are not allowed to ship used clothing into Mexico.
I once tried to ship my own personal clothes from Ciuadad Juarez to Morelia, and they were adament that it was against the law to do so. Estafeta would not accept my shipment in Juarez without it being packaged and sealed by customs. I went back to the border, and they told me that I had to go to the small importation office, but that used clothing would not be allowed. When I got to the customs small importation office, they insisted that used clothing was not allowed to be shipped into Mexico. I begged and pleaded with them, and they did let me do it in the end. I was travelling by motorcycle and wanted to ship my belongings ahead of me, and they saw the suitcase strapped on to the bike and kind of gave in knowing the predicament I was in.
But, for this reason, I think there may be problems shipping used clothing in from abroad. It certainly wasn't "easy" to do from Ciudad Juarez. I'm sure people probably get away with it, but I believe there is some sort of regulation against it.
I believe this is to protect their own domestic industry. Perhaps they can't get away with such a thing under NAFTA with new clothes, but still can with old clothes, just like officially you're not allowed to bring in a used desktop computer. |

...that depends where you are and what type of medication you take. If it is an uncommon drug in Mexico and you are in small town southern Mexico, it could be difficult. If you are in DF and it is a common drug, it probably won't be too difficult. I am assuming that as it is heart medication, it is very important for you to have it. Personally, I would take as much medication to last me as long I as I plan to be here (or until I know someone is coming to visit and they can bring it down with them). |

I have taken it upon myself to find out about my medicine.
It seems that it is readily available here in Guadalajara. If I do begin teaching, then I may chose a place close to Guadalajara or another larger city with better access to things I may need. |
