I am interested in teaching in Tawain in the near future but for the sole purpose of paying off my debts. I know that eventually I will go to Taiwan but I'm not sure which area or type of school would give me the best deal.
Aside from wasting money on the bars and the whole budget thing what can be done inspite of this criteria?
1. I have a 2 Year college degree
2. I have a TESL certification
3. I haven't taught in any institution yet just starting
4. Willing to live pretty much anywhere in the country if I have to
5. Willing to leave around the spring April/June.
6. Willing to work extra hours for extra pay
It is important that I have enough hours or hours available for me to work and make money I want to be able to send at least $1000 Canadian home a month. If I can do this I will be happy 
If there is anybody out there that might have an idea of whats best in this situation I would glady appreciate any helpful comments or suggestions.

You wont be sending $1000CDN home a month. At least not for the first 3-6 months that you are in Taiwan. The pay is just not enough for new teachers, regardless of hours and the costs of getting your life setup quickly add up. I have read before that the average teacher will not start "making money" until they are about 4-5 months into their time here.
If you set yourself a smaller goal of maybe $500, and increase it over time, I think you could maybe be close to the $1000 by the end of your time here. Keep in mind that you will be living quite frugally while you are here if you are sending that much coin home!
Your best bet to make money quickly is in the south, as the costs of living are somewhat cheaper than say Taipei, but of course costs of living are on an individual basis, there is no stead fast rule. |

I don't know but for some reason I got the impression that out of all the places in asia Tawain seemed to be the place to make the greatest profit out of ( Korea, Japan, Thailand, etc) Am I right? Or maybe that's how it used to be and the opportunity of making money is pretty much even for any area?
Anyways..I am far from confused but yeah $500 bucks a month isn't all that great but it should be ok. I guess the exchange range suscks between tawain and Canada.
I bet you the setup costs are cheap as hell though. I could probably survive on 1000 canadian for 2 months. |

Depending on where you live, how much you will pay for rent (think first, last and typically 1 month rent for damage deposit), and the cost of purchasing a scooter into that initial $1000. Rent will run you at the lowest end $200/mth if you are living by yourself. A el cheapo garbage scooter (read: waste of money) would run you about $300. That eats into that $100 VERY quickly. |

Yeah I see what your saying there in terms of needing more money maybe 1500...anyways i just really want to know if tawain is the best place out of asia to make a profit. |

Disclaimer: I do work for Hess, and the examples of income are Hess-specific, but I still think you might find this tool useful, even if you don't want to work for us.
Go and take a look at http://www.hess.com.tw/careers/english/nstcalculator/index.shtml
It will give you an idea of expenses, etc. |

One other thing to consider is larger chains also often offer some type of "loan program" for new teachers to ease the burden upfront. |

Why do you propose that Korea might be better than Tawain in terms of maximazing income ? |

Rent is paid....minimal startup costs
Return airfare is paid....a big chunk of change in your hand at the end of the contract
Approximately $2000 US a month offered in many schools...higher cost of living but STILL damn good money. |

| just though tI would give my 2 cents. Korea is WAY better for cash. YO u can earn 3-6000 US if you want to teach ESL. It is so easy to find privates in Seoul. I was making 5600 US at on point but must say I don't like teaching ESL. Subject teaching is much better - IMO . check out Work and Play Korea website. minimum private fee is 35,000 won = 1000 NT a REALLY good private fee for this place. That said Taiwan has better climate, friendlier people, mor relaxed living, scooter friendly and not so many princesses. If you want cash though Korea is number one in Asia BY FAR! Go there with your visitor visa and get privates. An American gets 3 minths Canadian 6. In that time you can make 3-8,000 to send home. |

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't illegal to do privates in Korea?
Isn't it illegal to work on a Visitor visa?
With that said if korea claims to have jobs that offer to pay for my flight and help with accomidations then thats the best way to go it sounds. It would be awesome to do privates too
Maybe I should check out some schools ?
With my credentials in mind, what are the chances of landing an ESL job in Korea or Tawain that will offer to pay for my flight or do anything that might help with startup costs? |
