First of all, thank you all for your contributions to this forum, it has helped me a lot in getting to know more about Oman, a country I have only seen as a tourist thus far.

I will have an interview in three weeks with SQU for a teaching job (non ESL) and - while I know this is an ESL forum - I was hoping someone might have heard enough on the grapevine to answer two of my most urgent questions re this job:

1. How is the housing provided by SQU and more important, do people have the choice to live off campus? The one thing I want to avoid for the future is to live and work at exactly the same place.

2. What is the salary I can expect with a PhD and 8 years teaching experience? Anything you could approx. tell me would help a lot if the salary topic comes up at the interview. I am very worried about this as I previously sold myself way too cheap in another Gulf country simply...

Housing depends on availability. Many people want the on-campus housing, and there is nowhere near enough, so I expect that now there are more living off-campus than on. They have an inventory of furnished places off campus. It should be no problem living off campus.

Can't help you on PhD salaries, but it has been discussed. Try a search on both Oman and the other ME boards here. We may not have any posters here now who know. They used to have a printed salary scale... and as I would 'guess' that the lowest level of professor would start between 1000-1200 OR. (plus housing, tickets, usual benefits)

With luck maybe someone with knowledge of the new scales will show up... it has been changed in the last year or so.

My time there was pretty much pre-historical, but I still have a few friends teaching in the program. Always been a British oriented place... Laughing ... although time has leavened it into an interesting mix of nationalities.

Does {edited} still work there? Just following up on an old email and would like some help. I'll remove this post if it is a problem.

I would suggest that you edit out her name for privacy reasons.

You can go to the SQU website and if she was language centre, there is a faculty list with all the info to reach people.

SQU has my attention, Duffy. I'll probably interview in the summer. I hear the money is lower than at the MOHE colleges. Can somebody post the pay schedule?

Duffy hasn't caught any fish lately. December has been very windy in Salalah. I haven't been fishing lately, but about three weeks ago I was at the fishing harbor in Raysut about dawn. There was no wind and the water was unusually clear. I caught about 30 trout in about two hours. All told for the season, I have enough fish in my freezer now to last until summer.

Anybody out there doing any fishing around Muscat?

BFS - TROUT!! Shocked Shocked

Are you saying that when I was trying to hook the big 'uns - AKA "Kingfish", in Heynor, you were pullin' in the Trout in Raysut ? Confused

Hang on, are not "Trout"a fresh water fish?? Shocked Shocked

Maybe yoo folks from over the pond have a different name for them?

Or, perhaps you got the namne mixed up. As far as I know, those fish you described to me yonks ago, seemed to be a mix between a Bass and a Mullet. The name given was "STOUT".

So what are they??

(Sorry Mods, gone a bit off topic here Smile )

Stout is a beverage popular in Britain.

Anybody out there ever visit Salalah and need a fishing guide let me know and I'll show you how to catch salt water trout on a hand line. Below is a pic of the species.

BFS,

The term used for this species of fish in the United Kingdom is; "Sea Trout" Although it is actually a young Salmon findng it's way back to the breeding ground.

What you have portrayed is either a Trout, Salmon or Sea Trout. It is not the fish we have been catching. Show me the black speckling on the fish here? You know I have caught some of them, they are clean silvery sided fish. not what you have portrayed. To clear any confusion, can you post a picture of one you have caught??
