Working there seems kinda isolated. I 've been offered a job there but I'm wondering if I'll get bored of the place.
I actually like living in Jakarta. Ha
Anybody been there to work or just on holiday? What did you think of the place?
Most of the hotties from seribu satu come from Manado but I'm not into that kind of scene, at least not anymore. |

Been there for a holiday but not sure I'd really want to live there, though others may disagree. Anyone fanatical about diving would be set up for life - so long as they can afford the fees - as the Bunaken marine reserve is just offshore.
It's a clean area by Indo standards and the countryside is scenic though in my opinion not in the same league as inner Bali or the Sumatra mountains. Frankly I felt I had seen and done all there was after a week there.
Most irritating thing was that there were no beaches where you can just turn up, buy drinks from a warung, lie under a tree and have a dip in the sea. Every decent beach had a fence round it and was part of an exclusive resort that wasn't open to visitors. Fine if you're on holiday but no use if you live locally. local food specialities weren't up my street either, but if you like sate rat and chargrilled fruitbat you'll be fine.
One suspects the job you've been offered is at the international school just east of the city? |

It's actually a Catholic Boarding School. Money's ok.
They are willing to fly me down and pay for my stay for a 2 day trial period.
I used to dive so maybe I'll take it up again. |

I've heard a lot of good things about Manado from other Indonesians ((Never been there myself)). From what I was told, it does seem to be a place to enjoy visiting, not living. My girlfriends family is from Manado and she doesn't even want to live there. Her parents and relatives all love it.....but most of them live in Surabaya now. Not Manado. |

This is one place where I really wanted to work. I went there five or six times in the '80s, as the diving is so great.
The Menadonese folk seem extremely friendly, are mainly Christian, and at the time, some older folk would come and start up a conversation in Dutch, which in my case is pretty rusty!
As you have recently read I'm sure, flying there can be interesting. At least the plane wreckage has been found, even though some of the equipment designed to find such things hadn't worked for 12 months.
But once there, try the reefs at Bunaken. Some of the best in the world.
Durned shame about the 26 - 55 age limit

If you take the job and are looking for a place to live, I've got a new house on the Citraland estate I could rent out to you.
Cheers,
Rob. |

Manado actually is a fun town. Cann't compared it with Jakarta of course but it's really a different world. The Manadonese look more Latino than Asian with dark skin, curly hair, brown eyes and choleric characteristics. But they are also an easy-going, emotional, sympathetic and happy people.
Manado may not have a lot of facilities, but the area is really nice. The islands surrounding the area are really a tropical island paradise, with white beaches. Many people find that they really like this funny, different, crazy town.
I'm originally from Manado, visit manado a couple times in a year. Last year I bought a land and going to build an house. And planning to move and live over there on may this year.
There are many nice places in Indonesia of course but I always find that Manado is the safest place in Indonesia.
Sorry guys, at least that's what I think over manado.
Cheers... |

Hi Rob,
I'm quite interest to rent your house in citraland if it's still available of course. I'm going to manado next month to build a house over there, that's why I do need a place to rent for a year only. I am planning to rent a house start on may. So, if that's possible, can you please let me know asap. And how much that will be for a year?
Thanks in advance,
Vera |
