Hello
I have just finished working for a UK based school, University at that, and they have not fulfilled their end of the deal. Can someone tell me if there is a government office in the UK with whom I can lodge a formal complaint. And if this is not the way, is there some sort of legal aid available?

Contact your nearest Employment Tribunal. The threat of doing so may hasten your employer into doing something.

I realise that this is probably way too late, but I've only just seen it.

Anyway, if you are still around and the problem is still persisting then contact your local Citizens' Advice Bureau. Their advice is totally free and they can let you know exactly where you stand and what you can do about it. They will put you in touch with other parties as necessary.

Any local library will have the contact details of your nearest branch or you can look them up in the phone book or Google: Citizens' Advice Bureau.

And no, you don't need to be British to ask them for advice.

I once had this happen.

I had to sue the employer. In my case it went to small claims court. I think it was a little under a hundred quid to start the case. The whole thing dragged on for about a year. There were various court dates and cancellations and I missed several days of work with no pay to attend.

In the end I won. But they didn't pay. So I had to have the bayliff sent in. That cost more money. Eventually I got it though!

You would need to be in the country to take legal action. Either that or be willing to come back multiple times. You would be wise to get legal advice to be sure you had a good case that was worth the bother and expense. The amount you are claiming would have to be substantial enough to be justified. And your witness would have to be willing to attend as well.

I am glad I took action. I feel a sense of self respect. I recouped more than I spent. I don't know if I would bother another time. I probably would.
