Scroll back, the part where I purposely mentioned Tokyo as the most expensive city. Too lazy too google but trying to cap on me. Leave it out.

Yes, but Apsara was partly right in saying that Tokyo is no longer the most expensive city in the world if the Economist is anything to by.

Although, Apsara wasn't correct in saying it hadn't been for a few years, according to the same source.

I think there was no malice in Apsara's post.

Of course, these "most expensive cities" in the world lists can be misleading as not all the factors that they judge each city by apply to each city equally.

1. Tokyo was recently repaced by Moscow.
2. Tokyo is #2.
3. Tokyo was #1 before it was #2.

I apologise for offending you, Sweetsee. I certainly didn't mean my post as a personal attack and had no idea it would be taken that way.

A google finds a number of different lists for world's most expensive city- depends on the criteria I suppose- and some of them certainly do have Tokyo in the top 3, or even as #1, you're right. I swear I've seen a couple in the last two years or so that listed cities like Oslo and Helsinki, and also Seoul, in the top 3 however.

You said that I was "an annoying pest" suggesting that I have annoyed you more than once- can you point me towards other posts of mine that have annoyed you so that I can figure out why I am so annoying and try to fix the problem? I have seen that you cop a fair amount of flak on this site, but that doesn't mean everyone who disagrees with you is making a personal attack on you.

I have been known to be wrong and don't mind being corrected but prefer it if someone does it in a more civil way than calling me a pest, although I've probably been called worse!

There's no need for you to apologize Aspara. I am sorry. I regret calling you an annoying pest. It was because of when you took a shot at me when everybody was beating up on me a while back. No worries, you are all right. That was a nice post you just made, too!
Have a great weekend,

Apology accepted, Sweetsee. I don't recall taking a shot at you, I try very hard not to be adversarial on the forum so I started going back through my old posts to see where it might have been, but I got bored after a few pages Wink

Anyway, surely 4 pages on the price of coffee in Japan is getting a bit ridiculous. I think we've discussed the topic in about as much depth as it deserves!

The survey you're quoting from seems to be last years Mercer study (the first Google hit). This actually places Tokyo 3rd, Seoul is 2nd.

This looks like it is for British companies as they compare all currencies to the GBP.

I've lived in London and Tokyo and I would have to say that accommodation and eating out are 100% definitely more expensive in London.

At the very highest end, or prices per sq. foot perhaps Tokyo would be ahead, but a great plus in Tokyo is that it is actually possible to live fairly central at an affordable price. Housing is functional. In London you would be looking at an average rent at the low end of about 100,000 yen, and you'd probably have to share!!! To live alone you can add another 50,000 yen.

The same goes for food, you can actually get a great bowl of ramen, sushi, Yoshinoya, Matsuya etc. for less than the price of a soggy cheese sandwich in London.

They seem to leave out a great many criteria that would change the list completely such as average salary in comparison to the cost of living, which makes it pretty useless and misleading.

Tokyo ain't that expensive but if you're converting everything to $'s then I can see why you'd think so. The American dollar currently has a similar value to half a slice of toast. In fact many Europeans are buying their goods online from the US because it's so damn cheap.

At my local French bread shop the morning set is a really nice cappuccino, latte, or espresso with a pastry for 300 yen. Tokyo doesn't have to be expensive, you just have to go to the right places.

Where is this place? I'd love to check it out.

With the shipping costs, I kind of doubt it. Rolling Eyes

Yes. Including shipping costs.

However most of us just jump on a cheap weekend flight and pick up the bargains ourselves; it saves waiting in for the delivery man.
