|

We have residency permits for China which will still be effective for a few months after we leave for Taiwan, so do we need separate tourist visas for Taiwan?
After all it is still considered a province by everyone in the 'mother country'
Serious question. |

Of course, you need separate visas. Taiwan is a separate political entity, issuing its own visas. |

OK, OK, don't get your knickers in a twist
It's kind of funny how EVERYONE on the mainland considers Taiwan to be nothing more than an offshore province but EVERYONE in Taiwan (or so it seems) considers themselves to be a different country. It's a bit confusing...
Hence my question.
Regardless, thanks for the info. |

I'm not getting my "knickers in a twist," mate. Your question was a silly one; my response reflected that. Who really cares what "EVERYONE" on the "mainland" supposedly thinks? Taiwan is a separate political entity from China and has been for half a century. I think in having to ask the question, you already knew the answer, which kind of begs why you asked it in the first place. |

Look, you have seriously misconstrued the tone of my reply. I posted the daft smiling face to show that I was kidding but you still chose to attack me.
If I had already known the answer to the question I wouldn't have posted it on the forum, it occurred to me while I was looking for visa information online.
It may not have been an intelligent question from your esteemed perspective but it was a serious question nonetheless. I think your hostile reply above was sillier than the initial question that prompted it.
You know you could have just chosen to NOT reply if you thought it was such a 'silly' question but I guess you had to prove a point.
So, thank you for your enlightening response I'll be sure to forward all future questions directly to you so that you can gauge their 'silly' factor before I post them up.

yamahuh,
You will not find much useful information in China about visa's for Taiwan. ALL .tw sights are blocked. You'll need to go to HongKong for your visa. You'll need proof of income (your last few pay stubs from your school will do) and a bank book showing a balance of at least $2000. If you have the name and address of a school or friend in Taiwan, take it too. If you're an American you'll need to pay $100usd and you'll receive a multiple entry visa good for two years (max stay any one time is two months). I don't know the rules for other countries but they're not all the same. Oh, and a couple of passport photos. I can't remember if I had to stay there overnight or I got it the same day - sorry.
If you get to the point where you're ready to come here, write again and I'll try to get more complete information for you.

Thanks Momcat!
The problem you mentioned is exactly what I was running into, things have been even worse since the earthquake it seems.
We need to show bank balances of $2000?
That seems odd to me, we'll have a good chunk of change in RMB or US (depending on if we convert it prior to arriving) but I'm not sure if we'll have $2000 each.
Thanks again. |

Is H.K the only place that we can get visas for Taiwan in China?

Unfortunately, yes. (well, perhaps Macao). China, as you have seen, denies Taiwan's existance as a country.
Do not bring RMB to Taiwan, change it in Hong Kong if you go through there. If not, exchange it in China. I think it's changing but a couple of years ago most countries wouldn't accept RMB.
Because I had heard stories about it being sometimes difficult to get a Taiwanese visa, and because I only wanted to make one trip to Hong Kong, I had everything prepared in detail. So I don't know if I really needed it or not. They only glanced at the page.

Yeah, I edited that last post after I did a few quick searches for embassies and consulates in China and found precisely none outside of Hong Kong!!
Travelling via Hong Kong might not be too much of an issue except for the time required to actually process the visa.
We're thinking of hitting Vietnam for a few days prior to entering Taiwan so Vietnam - H.K. - Taiwan is perfectly doable.
Thanks again. |

If you will be in Vietnam why don't you get your visa there? It can be done in the same day if you want to pay extra. I thought it was also possible, albeit more difficult, in Macao.
Having a name and phone number of a friend in Taiwan is helpful. Having their ID number even more so.
The cash requirement is easily overcome but you might want to have that anyway for start up costs. |

Hong Kong is okay but I prefer to go through Singapore. It's cheaper and cleaner and I just generally like it better. I went there when I got my work visa and, again, it was pretty easy.
JetStar Asia http://www.jetstar.com/sg/index.html has some pretty decent airfares to Taiwan.

The UN, the US, Russia, the EU. France, Italy, Germany, India, Brazil ... .... .... apparently, none of whom recognise Taiwan as a nation independent of China.
You however apparantly do not care, and as a foreign resident of the autonomous province you have a perfect right not to care, just as the rest of the world has a perfect right to have a quiet chuckle |

What are you, a PRC toady? I personally care very little about the ROC's (Taiwan) international standing, recognized or not.
My only point in this thread has been to point out that Taiwan issues its own visas to visitors and residents and that those who would visit or live here need to arrange visas separate and apart from mainland visas in order to do so. Despite what Orwellian mainlanders and their sympathizers might say about the "province" of Taiwan, visas for mainland China have absolutely no validity in Taiwan. Care to dispute that fact? Do you really have any point at all? |

Just agreeing with yamayuh 'mate', and with the UN, the US, China, Russia, Brazil, India, Germany, Italy, France etc etc etc,
But have it your way: Taiiwan is a seperate country. You are right. The rest of the world and its international organisations are all wrong. Keep taking the tablets, whatever. |

I'm not saying Taiwan is or isn't a legit country. Whether it is or not has no bearing on entry visa and resident visa issues. Show up in Taiwan with a PRC resident visa and try to live here if you like. Now put down the crack pipe and read what I was saying.
Visitors to Taiwan need to arrange for visitor visas to enter Taiwan as it a separate political entity. Visas from mainland China are not valid in Taiwan. You can read that however you want: renegade province or sovereign nation. Take you pick; I don't give a toss either way. |
