The housing is not too bad but we have had a AED 300 raise last year because the university "does not want to cut on your housing."
Some colleagues too have to put some of their own money into rent, so as not to move every year.
Administration on the other hand had a 6% raise...

Oh and of course, we now have this huge new university in the middle of the desert. The pits, it is still being constructed as we are speaking...

Hang on, Anna -- Some staff may have got a raise this year, but many of them haven't for several years. Talk to a few of them. Yeah, faculty's raises stank and will probably continue to do so, but most people have been able to stay in their apartments/villas, even with the new horrendous rent jacks.

OP -- The housing is fine. I am an instructor (not a prof), single, and have a nice two bedroom flat with a gym, pool and air-con included, and I don't pay anything extra for it. I found my place myself, which is an option here as long as you stay within the price limits. If housing is the only thing you're concerned about then, yes, come to ZU. I don't think you'll have any problems.

Oh and good news about ZU... We are not getting the 15% raise HCT is getting.
I am sorry Harriet but I think with no raise and basic housing, ZU is not an ideal place to work for. I do not like the new campus either.

HCT got 12%, Not 15%. And after sifting through the voodoo economics of it all, it may not be a better deal for some than the previous pay system.

Read the other thread about this..

From what I hear from friends, this is still one of the most pleasant places to work for. If I had the chance, I would.

I'm with you, grand fromage. ZU's OK all things considered, and I'd so much rather work here than at Dubai Women's.

Anna-- I think with the new rent caps in Dubai at least, PERHAPS we will see raises this year. Maybe I'm a Pollyanna, but ZU doesn't do all that badly by its English department. Yes, we'd surely do better financially going to Qatar or Kuwait, but I'll stay here, thank you.

Yes - by all means you will not have any problems here. Thanks Harriet for the well-balanced, unbiased report. You got the company line, DOWN!

grandfromage- Is it still a good place to work? Tell me why you think it is a good place. Are you a happy teacher or an unhappy teacher? Do people help each other out at ZU? Is there a postiive work environment?
Which place is better Abu Dhabi or Dubai? Is it true the students control things? Someone told me this which I find disturbing?

What are the good things about Abu Dhabi? Is the traffic bad. I hear the place is really humid? How many months of year? Are there any public beaches or do you have to join a beach club?
Thanks for any replies.
