I'm always trying to update the Peru info I have and would like to get opinions about online TEFL certs. Here are a few that I-ve come across. Anyone had experience with these or know what kind of reputation they have?

I have completed the online i-i TEFL course

I guess it is OK, the subject matter is relevant and well presented, and the assignements are easy to follow and understand and have a variety of task that need to be completed and marked before you can progress to the next section.

My online tutor was good, and responded to my emails...

HOWEVER - I dont think it will make anyone a good teacher...it will give you the most basic qualification...but thats about it.

I think you learn in the classroom, not online.

I have to agree although I have just finished my TEFL course online, I have been teaching (ESL to children ) for 6 years and I found my own experiences useful when approaching some of the tasks.

Completely free online TEFL course at www.TEFLBootCamp.com

No certificate - but all you need to know - without the fluff and filler other courses throw in to make their course look LARGE.

If you want to educate yourself, a good place to start, and written by an experienced TEFL trainer (me!).

Ted,

You have good karma. Excellent site and service, meat and potatoes. Especially good for new teachers taking a first whirl.

Thanks for doing this and really being what a teacher is -- one who shares knowledge and doesn't covet it.

Different is how I'd put it. Rather than use just any old thing, some of us like to find the best, do the best, develop the best possible.

I never ever thought I'd develop materials either and it isn't part of my job description (which is training teachers in methods). But I found that the best way to help weak and / or beginning teachers was to give them good, substantial, easy to use and alter teaching materials. Had to make my own, there wasn't a lot out there beyond the handout. Some but not a lot. And I've enjoyed it too, trying to develop the best thing for the job to be done....

And in the process you reach thousands of students rather than the 10-20 in your classroom (or 30-40 / 40- 100)

So I don't think you are "strange", just positively different. So many others stay satisfied with the "whatever just is."

I'll take a longer look at your site shortly and send you some feedback, for what that is worth....

Cheers,

DD

If by "in the classroom" you mean you learn by actually teaching students, I agree.

Haha, yeah I did mean practical 'in the class room doing it' rather than in the class reading or listening to someone talk about it.

By the same token though, and my experience isnt vast, but the standing up in front of the class is generally the easiest thing I have ever done in any employment....

So I guess the learning and planning done to give me the tools to walk into the class to start with are pretty important..so from that point even an online course isnt so bad

There are certain things in any profession that one can only truly learn by doing.
