Wait a minute... the opposite of liberal is capitalist?? huh?

Who said this? 007? 47? It certainly wasn't me.

Allow me to elaborate on my earlier, somewhat enigmatic post about the word liberal:

In the realm of economics, liberal and capitalist are synonymous. However, these days it seems to be out of fashion to use the word capitalist. I was referring to this economic sense of the word liberal, in keeping with the theme of the thread.

In the social sense, liberal has a different meaning. The one VS and Cleo were thinking of in their posts. (BTW, in most countries it's a fairly benign word, but in the US it's often wielded as a term of abuse.)

To illustrate the difference, look at Thatcher and Reagan: both economic 'liberals' but social conservatives. Van Norden, on the other hand, is a socialist and a liberal. Like most good-hearted people.

Oh yes, baby boy, you are economically a 'Thatcherist' , and politically a 'Reaganist'.
So, do we understand that the other bad-hearted people are capitalist and Bushist??? Laughing

As a rule of thumb, I'd say you could do much, much worse.
