Just wondering whether its a good idea to study (for a masters) in Japan?
I was thinking of doing this part time if it was possible, or is that not a good idea? |

A bit more information please, like what do you want to do your masters in? Do you want to go to a Japanese university or a foreign affiliated one? |

I would like to study for a Masters in IT.
I'm very interested in teaching IT (I have taught IT at tertiary levels but not at a university). It doesn't matter if the uni is japanese or foreign, as long as it is taught in English.
Thanks for your help |

There are only two foreign universities with campuses in Japan, Columbia (Masters of Arts) and Temple (M.Ed. D.Ed, Law and economics). Im not sure if they offer a Masters in IT. The only other alternative is by doing a degree by distance learning, and a Japanese university may require Japanese ability before you are admitted to their graduate program.
PS do you want to teach at a Japanese university or a foreign one? Foreign universities generally require a phD, and you can get part time jobs with a Masters at a Japanese university. |

If it is possible, I want to do some part time study to get a Masters. Distance learning sounds good.
Teaching in Japan is an option, but I just want to have better qualifications to teach in other countries and I want to teach IT (not just english).
Thanks PaulH |

As for teaching IT in Japan, I am not really sure how you should go about it. As far as I know (I have been in Tokyo for 12 years) there are no schools looking for IT instructors using English. You would have to be able to speak, read and write Japanese quite well. There are plenty of Japanese people out there (bilingual at that) who are teaching and you would be in competition with them. I think there is a better forum for you at gaijinpot. Try the IT careers forum

Someone there might be able to help you and certainly reading some of the posts should help you out too. I think you should be prepared to teach English as your fulltime job and main source of income if you do come to Japan. |

Thanks Sherri.
I'm aware of the competition (of teaching IT). I just want to upgrade myself for the future. Thanks again! |
