I have been with a new school for 3 months now. This is the first time they ahve taken money for health insurance. They have not even given me the card yet. They are taking 900NT$ a month. I have been here for 2 years now and never payed more than 300NT$/ month for health insurance. Does that sound right to anyone? Isn't the school supposed to kick in some of that. SHould i be looking for a new school? Are they ripping me off?

Maybe they forgot to take the $300 a month for the first few months and took the full amount all at once.

i should clarify becuase coyote brings up a good point....for the first while that you're working at a school you're not going to be covered, because you still arent an ARC holding foreigner yet, depending on when you got your health insurance card, is when you should be getting billed from for health insurance, if they are taking money off for the months you werent actually covered you are getting ripped off...

you should ask them to break down the cost for you and see how much you are actually paying per month, make up some story about wanting to set up a budget or something...

I hate to jump into the discussion, actually I don't hate to.

You should have a health card very soon after you start paying or having healty insurance deducted off you pay.

I pay about $800NT per month for health insurance. I think it is a function of how much you are paid, how many hours your school has that they can charge you time to, and how honest your school is.

Your health card will have you picture on it, because you had to supply one or two pictures with your application for your health card.

As soon as you are legal - Work Permit and ARC - it should not take very long for you to get your health insurance (two or three weeks - maybe four)

IF you are paying taxes and your school says you have a work permit, you should also have a health card.

Bye Bye

My school pays a fairly large percentage of the health insurance. I have no idea if schools are required to pay a percentage, but if not the amount paid by the student could vary quite a bit.

I also received a temporary health card as soon as I was eligible for the ARC. The actual card came through about two weeks later.

When you say full coverage that should be clarified. Not everything is free. There are some treatments that are not covered or only partially covered.

I had my kidney stone removed and it cost me NT$7000 and I also had 'full coverage'. I don't resent this, it was a fairly small amount to pay given the extreme pain I was in, I just wanted to mention that it is not entirely free.

true, i meant full coverage as in dental, medical, etc....but yeah, the cost is quite significantly lower here, especially for dental...a friend of my gf had 4 wisdom teeth removed, 2 at a time, $100NT each time...pretty incredible compared to the cost back home

As someone has stated we pay a percentage of what we earn so the actual amount that you pay will depend upon what your salary is each month.

It is all rather complicated. Foreign teachers are considered Category 1 employees. The maximum premium rate is 6% of which 30% is the employees responsibility and 70% the responsibility of the employer.

Based upon that, a teacher earning NTD60,000 should be paying around NTD300 a month while the employer would pay NTD700 per month.

Thats my understanding anyway.

Clark,

Does someone earning $60,000 pay the maximum of 6%? If so, I believe the total insurance would be $3,600 and the employee's share would be $1080.

Good question and that is where it gets complicated.

The percentage premium varies hence my earlier 'up to 6%'. Some may only pay 4.5% for example which is often recommended for the first year.

So knowing how much exactly someone should be paying may prove difficult for anyone to predict, but if anyone is being charged more than 6% then they should look into this with their school and if necessary the authorities.

My Canadian private medical insurance with TIC is about to expire and I'm shopping around for a reputable company with good rates here in Taichung City. I'm a bit confused if our National Health Card covers most things or if I should get private insurance for medical emergencies or accidents. I'm worried if i ever got into a scooter accident, broke a leg etc..

Is the healthcare system reliable in Taiwan oR should I continue and extend it with TIC? It's wayy more expensive but If I needed to fly back, they would cover costs. Overhere, NanShan Insurance I only pay between 600-1,200NT for coverages. I'm a bit worried. Any recommnedations?
