We have a similar policy at our uni-if they miss five classes then their student visa is revoked and they get sent home. Of course we have to do the paper trail thing.
The fact is, many students have no idea of what is required in a university classroom. With their new-found freedom they assume they can do whatever they want and not have to pay the piper. Mind you, this doesn't only apply to ESL students but university students in general.
So it's the job of the ESL department to get them acclimated to acceptable classroom behavior and professor expectations, and sometimes you do have to break a few eggs...you know, tear 'em down and rebuild 'em.
Adult learners are a whole other kettle of fish. |
