What, exactly, are the requirements to pass the medical when one arrives to taiwan. I understand they test blood and urine. is it basic or intensive? Does anyone know anyone wha has failed? |

Blood test - for parasites and disease
Urine test - for drug use
X-ray - for tuberculosis
Then they check your height, weight and blood pressure, give you an eye exam, and a doctor asks you a few questions.
The procedures may vary slightly from hospital to hospital, but it's all more or less the same. |

They don't test urine anymore, just take a tiny bit of blood and do the other things.
I've heard of someone's xray being refused because he was sick when it was taken. But, he had another one a week later and it was fine. |

I think that the blood test only tests for HIV. So if you pass that then it doesn't necessarily entail that you are disease free. Fortunately for you, gone are the days when a urine test and stool sample were required. |

I have minor asthma (sports/pollution induced). I lived in Beijing for six months with only minor issues, so I don't think it'll be an issue in terms of my quality of life in Taipei (which, from what I've heard, is less polluted than Beijing).
However, asthma is mentioned on the medical form. Should I just "fail to mention" my asthma at my medical exam? Or will it not be an issue? |

dangerous is dead on...
the only thing they're really looking for is that you arent carrying communicable diseases, and that you're a fully functioning, walking, talking English speaking foriegner....
might as well be forthcoming with all ailments, i've heard great things about TCM (traditional chinese medicine) and they may even have a recommendation for you about how to ease your suffering in the poor air quality....i told them about my rhumatoid arthritis, and the medication that i'm taking for it (i brought a years supply from Canada) and there was no problems at all....
they will check urine of females, as they want to screen for pregnancy as well...
dont sweat it, its more just a bureacratic process than anything else...paperwork must be processed, filled out in triplicate, and filed...

My boyfriend has a mild form of Bipolar Disorder. He has been taking three different medications for about 10 years now and is completely stable (you wouldn't be able to tell if you met him).
1) Would they be able to find out that he is on those medications?
2) Would it be seen as a bad thing if they did find out?
Any other problems he might encounter during the medical exam that you can think of? |

I know a guy who must take some pretty serious meds. Not sure if they're for bipolar disorder (I believe they are though) and he has been here more than 10 years. We all have to endure this rigamorole annually, so....
I doubt very much they will pick up on it unless he says something. They have to be actually testing for the specific med AFAIU. But I'm no medical technician. Just my opinion. Sorry I can't be more reassuring. |
