It's true abotu Japan's custody/kidnapping laws. What an American would consider kidnapping by one parent from another, the Japanese permit under some circumstances.
One should also consider that Japanese divorce law can be incredibly harsh. Getting a divorce, particularly if you've been unfaithful, can be impossible or extrememly unfavorable.
I've got a friend who's been living with his girlfriend while seeking a divorce and partial custody of his kids... for 7 years. He's a stable, loving guy, with a lucrative office job, while the wife is a bit of a nutjob living on alimony, but he's been unable to divorce her, period. He's also struggling to get custody of the kids, but it doesn't look good. He's forced into a "weekend father" role, if he's given any access at all.
The courts think of divorce as "destroying the fabric of society", tend to side with the mother for custody, and may not grant a divorce at all if one partner doesn't want to divorce. |

No offense, nickelgoat, but I'm getting tired of seeing this thread getting bumped. It's important, yes, but obviously not a heckuva lot of people are contributing to the thread. There are more bumps than contributions at this point.
I'll even the odds by adding this informative link
http://www.debito.org/whattodoif.html#divorce
then politely ask if you can get a moderator to make this a sticky. |

given that nickelgoat is the one to keep bumping the thread, and then asks that the topic should be given a sticky would lead one to theorize that he is going through the experience he describes himself, and thus feels a need to treat the subject with much more importance than others are placing on it. |

Ah, reasoned debate I see, just the kind of thing that the Mods look for when considering canditates for sainthood, i mean eternal stickydom.
Now if you could just desist with the bumping of your own thread (it's bad form old boy - if others think that it merits bumping they may do so, for you to bump your own thread just indicates that other board members do not consider it worth replying to) it can be left to sink or swim on its own merits, like every other thread on the board ('cept for the stickies of course, but we've already covered those)... |

Drunken rants are never OK - and I can tell these last two posts were made while the posters were drunk. One reason there are so many problems for foreigners in Japan. |
Does anyone else see the irony here? |

Is it easy to get divorced if you don't have kids? How long does it take to get finalized and what do you have to do? |
