Americans out there ought to read THE CULTURE OF FEAR, by Barry Glassner. If the name sounds familiar, it's because he was interviewed in Michael Moore's BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE.
A good fiction book I've read lately is THE CEREUS BLOOMS AT NIGHT. I can't remember the author, because I mailed the book to myself in China rather than carry a bunch of books in my luggage, and the package has gone AWOL. |

Do the books have to be recent? Lately I've read and enjoyed a bunch of Twain and "My Antonia" by Willa Cather.
For light reading I always enjoy Bill Bryson.
The best travel book I've read is Robert Byron's "The Road to Oxiana." Brilliant.
Movies, hmmm. "Best in Show" is a riot. Lately I've also enjoyed "The Mission," "The Remains of the Day," and "The City of Lost Children/La Citee des Enfants Perdus."
I'm afraid I just don't read much fiction that's newer than 20 years. |

Kurochan : "Americans out there ought to read THE CULTURE OF FEAR, by Barry Glassner."
Is that REALLY what you meant to say ? What about non-Americans ?
Is it too difficult for us ? Do you really want to exclude the rest of humanity from reading this book ?
Shame on you ! |

Come, come. The book is apparently about the current political climate in the United States of America, so I think it is quite reasonable for Kurochan to recommend it particularly to Americans. Presumably it would interest Americans in particular. Kurochan certainly did not recommend that non-Americans not read it.
If you were suggesting a book about politics in Scotland I don't think it would be unreasonable to suggest that it would be of particular interest to other Scots.
But yes, we know how horrible those Americans are, every one of them always assuming that every other native English speaker is also an American. Shame on Kurochan. |

wow! you guys have been an eye-opener to me. Most of the books that i have been reading are guide books such as How to teach your dyslexic child to read or Alpha to Omega or Rescue reading !! (and still i'm not able to help all of the dyslexic children in my classes).
Okay, so i have to get a life....
I'm going to look for a book right now. how is Dr. Seuss... |

Good thread.
We just bought an old house, and the owners left a stack of Michener novels, presumably because they were too big and heavy to move .
I read "Caribbean" in the month of September, and really enjoyed it.
For good movies, I recommend "Beyond Silence" (German) and "The Official Story" (Argentina). |

| "Seabiscuit" doesn't ring any bells, there was a book and film (Richard Burton I think) called "Sea wife and Biscuit", is this the one? |

I guess Seabiscuit hasn't made it to Turkey yet. The book and movie are being promoted in N.A. these days. I think it's about a race horse but I haven't paid much attention.
Great to see all the recommendations as I'm not familiar with lots of these books and movies. Keep it up! |
