If anyone out there knows of any South Americans who are either living in Argentina without papers or who want to come and work here legally then pass this on-

www.patriagrande.gov.ar

It's an amnesty for South Americans-starts in April and will probably run for about 6 months (a guess based on how long the amnesty under which i got my residency lasted).

Basically, all they need to do is show their passport, a couple of passport photos, legalised/apostilled birth certificate and criminal record from their home countries and..hey presto...shiny new Argentine residency.

EDIT: THIS AMNESTY IS NO LONGER OPEN.

This is not for all South Americans, just MERCOSUR (Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil and now Venezuela) plus the Bolivia and Chile. Good luck!

It's for all South Americans except French Guyana, Surinam and Guyana.

Matt,

Were you ever able to get your residency? Is the thing that you were getting your residency on still open? I know you said you had to have a passport stamp prior to some certain day and had to get a lot of things certified.

If it worked... and is still possible to do I would love to know some details.

Thanks,

The amnesty for non-mercosur citizens finished last march and i can't imagine it opening up again for at least another 1-2 years, if ever again. Sorry...I was lucky enough to find out about it- it wasn't something they widely advertised, rather like this new one-a lot of people won't know about it until it's too late.

Do you know of you already have to be living in Argentina to do this? Or could we apply if we live in Peru?

You have to be here and do it in person. And at the moment it's only open in Capital Federal and Buenos Aires Province although i think they're planning on extending it to other provinces.

i'm pretty sure it's no longer going. and it's only valid if you come here and don't leave the country (ie you have to be here either on your initial tourist visa having not left the country or here illegally).
