Great prices for public transit. I really only use taxis when going out on the weekend since drinking and driving is a bad idea anywhere and especially here as the roads are lousy and scary when your sober probably worse when drunk. And no parking near any of the clubs.

What are the conditions of Tijuana, in terms of security and crime? I've heard it's a city of chaos at times.... maybe that's not accurate

Okay, now I'm beginning to wonder ... You have been reading through old posts and bumping them forward, how could you miss Gordogringo's input?.... Gordo has been posting and posting about the wonders of TJ. Maybe he has a job opening.

Security as long as you keep a low profile at night is no big deal. The worst crimes are committed by the police so you must learn to deal with them respectfully but firmly. Yes,no and that is not correct are really all you need to say to them and eventually they will find easier prey and leave you alone.Keep your door locked and live in a good colonia and you won't have too many problems. But laws here are not enforced unless thier is money in it for the cops so things can get a bit chaotic. As for jobs I retained 100% of my teachers from last year so no new openings till June when 4 of them finish thier masters programs. |

TJ is more out of whack than ever. The military will not return the police officers guns for the time being so they have purchased sling shots. Not kidding. They bought them in bulk so 40% of them are hot pink in color. Lets see the machismo in carrying a hot pink sling shot to intercept a bad guy. I see a lot broken windows in Tijuana's future as well as the officers mothers giving them lectures regarding putting someones eye out with that. Hope they get cookies and milk after.

In Monterrey - rentals can be as low as $2000 pesos for an ok place in an ok neighborhood or $3000 for a half decent place in a really nice neighborhood. It varies a lot and depends who is renting the place. It can range from $2000 - $8000 a month depending where you want to live and how big a house or apt you want - furnished or unfurnished. If you want to live in the primarily ex-pat area it's probably from about $5000 and up.
We pay $3000 for two bedrooms/1 1/2 bath. Electricity varies but with no air conditioning or electric heat (it's cold here right now) it's about $250 for two months. Gas with our little gas heater going quite often is about $400 - $500 for two months I think...phone is about $200 without long distance and not too many calls to cell phones a month.
It's very safe here, neighbors watch out for neighbors - we have a neighborhood watch guy on a bicycle. His bike got stolen once but that was his fault. For the most part though - very, very safe. We do have shootings but they are primarly mob and drug related.
Our roommate was working at HP for a short time and making about $7000 a month and now he's at GE and making more although I'm not sure how much more. There are a lot of American companies so people tend to make more if they can speak English here.

Tijuana's worst got thier guns back today. So extortion and murder rates will head back to all time highs again. And the mayor is now announcing that he is vacating his office to run for govenor of Baja. If he makes it you will never see such an exodus of people leaving Tijuana for good as you will then.Anybody with gas money and a visa will become San Diego's newest residents. If he wins the school goes up for sale and the misses and I head to Vera Cruz.
