| buy it off of amazon.com. They had Canon Digital Rebel SLR for like $500... |

But that's not the cheapest in Osaka or Kobe. And the shipping would make it more expensive. It would also be more difficult exercising the warranty, while in Japan, if needed. |

| well however you get one, and SLR is the way to go, going to a beautiful country with a trashy camera really sucks. My Canon Rebel is my baby and she is always trustworthy..lol |

Personally, I'd just get it from yahoo.co.jp online auction. Japanese auctions tend to be REALLY honest and there are far fewer scams and ripoffs than on e-bay. And if you still are skeptical you may be able to arrange escrow service...
Of course, this takes into account that either you have sufficient Japanese language skill to do it on your own or have a really good friend to help you every step of the way. Setting up, and then using a Japanese yahoo auction account it NOT easy... But once you get the hang of it, it's quite brilliant!
So far, I've bought everything from a 36" widescreen TV, to car audio equipment (like amps and subs and a new head unit), to a cigar humidor, to audio wiring cables, and even an electronic dictionary, among other misc. items..... So far, never a glitch. |

| I agree with Jim that yahoo auctions will be the cheapest even with shipping and I've never had a problem. However I usually buy electronics from a store as I like to get the 5 year insurance deal (usually 1/2% of purchase price). I don't know how often I've used it for stuff I've bought that has gone on the blink. Saved me a fortune in repair costs that's for sure. |

| Shipping via amazon.co.jp is free BUT if you do go that route, make sure you've triple checked which model you're buying and if it has English menus. Not all do! There are Japanese and International Models - sometimes meaning close to $200 price difference! |
