|
|
As I mentioned before, I have to leave China in order to come back since I have stayed a year.
My visa will be up on the 14th of February.
1)Does this mean that I have to be out BY the 14th or can I leave on the 14th as well?
2) Considering that it is February, what would be the best way to cover the distance from Shanghai to Hong Kong, taking the following into consideration:
a) time
b) reliability
c) money money money
3) Once in Hong Kong, what is the best visa that can be had with no supporting paperwork (business or work contract) in terms of the time allowed to stay in China for the price? Any good places to go?
4) Is it cheaper to stay in Hong Kong for a couple of nights or to have the visa done by express method?
5) Once again considering that it is February, when would be the best time to leave and come back?
6) If the trip can be done in a matter or 2-3 days, do you recommend that I book 3 days in my hotel or do I risk coming back to a full house with nowhere else to go?
7) If traveling by train is the best method of travel, do I go to the train station itself to book the ticket or should I use a travel agent?
Should I pay one way trip or round way in Shanghai or do I buy the return from Hong Kong?
Thanks for the patience and I think this just might help out others in the same situation. |

You can leave on the 14th.
That's also the day the holidays start for many. You do NOT want to be traveling on that day.
I'd go a couple of days early.
(really bad timing with the visa there)

Tourist Visa.

Cheaper to get the express visa. Might be a good idea to check to see what holidays the Chinese visa office is observing

The best day to travel will be the 18th (CNY), any other time after and including the 14th will be the chaotic. (if you've never travelled at this time of year before, you've got no idea.)

Book the hotel (if there are any rooms available even now)

If there are any tickets available still, where you get them will depend on who has them. As a last resort there are scalpers at the station, but there are also forgeries.

why are you asking us?
It's a really bad time to travel. Transport and hotels will be packed and even now you may have trouble getting tickets/bookings.
As many have holidays begining 14th, trains will be PACKED from that day on.
I'd definately spend the extra and fly.
A few years ago you were guaranteed a seat on the plane. These days a lot more people can afford to fly so I'd book as early as possible.
Transport and hotels DO jack the prices up for the busy season.
Don't think you're going to find a cheap way to do this at this time off year.
Good luck. |

This may sound stoopid, but check out a Shanghai-HK group tour option. Airfare, hotel, meals included, and usually cheaper than the plane ticket alone!
Trust me. I'm a waijiao. |

The Internet - you can ask the most inane questions that a lazy bum unwilling to browse through some guidebook needs to work out answers to. |

Another alternative reality situation for me. In my reality;
The Lunar New Year occurs on Sunday 18 February 2007.
The official public holidays are Monday 20 to Wednesday 21 inclusive.
Most people will also have Thursday 22 and Friday 23 off.
Mass travelling will begin on Friday 16, especially afternoon and evening.
You won't be able to get a new visa in Hong Kong from Monday 19 to Wednesday Wednesday 21.
I wouldn't be confident of getting the express, one-day visa service, on Friday 16.
Oh, and you would be better off getting an F visa in Hong Kong, not a tourist visa. |
