Can anyone tell me if it is right for an employer to take an unemployment deduction from the salary of a teacher who will never be in a position to collect it? Is there a way to circumvent this practice, or is it just "something that everyone has to pay"? Appreciate the advice. |

That's no different than jobs in any other country. In Canada I paid into unemployment insurance all the time, knowing full well there was no way to opt out or ever be able to collect on it. |

You can collect it. If you stay in Japan and don't have a job, and fill out all the right paper work, you are entitled to unemployment benefits. That's the point. |

You're lucky that your employer has enrolled you in it!
Not sure if you can claim any of it back when you leave? But anyway it is a life saver, especially in the shark infested waters of ELT.
If you ever get fired or don't get your contract renewed be sure to ask for a rishoku-hyo. You will receive a good portion of your salary for at least six months while you look for another job. |
