I was a teacher in Japan for 3 years and in New York City for 3 years. I find myself saying, "I taught ESL for 3 years in New York."

Like you, I never really "taught' In Japan, so I don't think it counts for much. I was more of a cultural liason or something.

In New York I taught immigrants. They were "true beginners" I also taught international students from develped countries.
