How much tax do you guys pay? (If you dont mind me asking)

By tax I mean all compulsory contributions, including 'insurance'.

I'm just wondering because in the UK on a 12k salary ( Y2,843,051 per year / Y236920.92 per month, before tax) I have to pay 177 (Y41,935.00) income tax and 109 (Y25,824.40) council tax to my communist overlords each month. So if nothing else, I'm hoping that the tax break in Japan will make me a bit richer if I manage to get over there this year!

How do your tax experiences compare in Japan?

thanks!!

I pay 10% income tax and another 5% separately to my local council every year.

Sorry, do you mean every month, i.e. as a percentage of your monthly wage?

thanks

Yes, as in of every 100 yen I earn, the government gets 15 yen and I get 85, that's right. My wage varies every month as I'm freelance, so no point giving you exact amounts.

I should say I don't teach English anymore but that this is pretty much the same as what I used to pay as an eikaiwa teacher. You will most likely want to (or have to) sign up for National Health Insurance, I am not on this but I believe that in the first year you pay a negligible amount, and from the second year it goes up to around 10 percent of your income, over and above the income tax you already pay.

Hopefully one of the posters who is teaching English currently will come along and answer you as well- they might have been scared off by the pound sterling amounts, try converting your post to yen Wink
