I have been teaching in PT for the last year and love it, but am thinking that I would like to move on at the end of this year. The obvious move is to Spain, possibly the south. Do any of you have any experience of this move, and what are the advantages and disadvantages? (My current job pays me only 800 month, but I have free housing in a 2 bed apartment, not shared, and teach 30hours a week, how likely am I to get anything approaching this in Spain?)

If you stay in a room in a shared flat in Madrid it'll set you back about 400 euros a month, so if you want your 800 euros on top of that you're looking at needing 1200 a month, and at 15 euros an hour you'd need to work 20 hours a week to get that. If you worked 25 hours a weeks and were on 1500 a month then you could maybe find a small studio flat for 700 euros a month. Remember that Madrid is a bit more expensive cost-of-living wise than Portugal though.

This is perfectly do-able in Madrid once you've got your hours up, but spending nearly half your income on accommodation is a bad idea, I've tried it, keep it under a third of your salary and you can live sustainably.

Well, as my name suggests I am in Jerez in southern Spain.

Where I am 400 euros would rent you a two bedroom apartment (not shared).

As for salaries, well it depends which school but 1200 is about normal. Or about 15 euros as an hourly rate.

If you went to Seville there would be more chances of work, but the rent is more expensive (but not up to Madrid levels).

Good luck

It looks as if I might as well stay here, just move down to the Algarve, or Lisbon, (and I already have the paper work for living and working here in Porto)
