Took a stroll on an overcast and cool Sunday afternoon and got some photos.

First, here is the hotel Gran Melia, to get your bearings.

Everything is nice and close. The Melia is right next to monument called El Caballito...

and the monument to the Revolution is behind the Melia, on Avenida De La Republica...

On De La Republica, there are three or more restaurant bars, with one pictured below...

This one, as well as two others on the same street, may be pricey. If we're feeling cheap, there is the bar to the hotel Carlton, which you find around another corner on Edison street.

or the bar in the Hotel Oxford, a favorite hotel of mine, across from the Carlton...

We could always simply hook up at one of these places and move onto to somewhere else. Would be easy enough to leave the final location name at the Melia front desk. |

				| If you can convince the herd to go on a Saturday, I'm fine with it. Friday was chosen to accommodate the conference that is the main reason people are coming to DF, though there might be some flexibility? |

There'll be others, as always Matt. I'll try to find you a urine-soaked alley bar to feel right at home, for the next one.

I added a poll so you can all vote on if the Friday or Saturday is better, and since Saturday is winning, I've changed the title of the thread... |

				| Obviously, I voted for Saturday night. It would be great if we could change it, but as of yesterday there is a possibility that I might not be able to come. I am having a problem in the US and it is possible I will have to make a weekend trip there in the next few weeks if I can't resolve it in the next few days. Sooooo.....how mad is everyone going to be if we change the day on my behalf and then I don't show up???? |

				| At this point, I'm good either way...4 others said Saturday, so why don't we just go with that? Is 8 PM ok? Which place are we meeting at? |

OK, so I am going to the US this weekend and I hope everything will be resolved.

What about the Oxford as a place to stay on Saturday night? LP says some people "find a special allure" the 1940s art deco style and "others just call it a dive." |

				Does that mean you're coming?

I think a number of us here have stayed at the Oxford at one time or another. I'd call it a dive with a special allure. The whole hotel is slanted...sinking into the park next door. The carpeting is the gaudiest thing you've ever seen. But, it's clean inside, fairly quiet, and at a good price. If you stay get the double room, even if you are alone. The single rooms are closets.

You can't make a reservation there unfortunately, but if it's full when you arrive, there are a dozen other hotels in the area of varying quality. Avoid hotel Pennsylvania. |

I like the Oxford, definately a dive with special allure. I second that the single rooms are TINY, but the doubles are HUGE. You could easily fit 4 double beds in there. The doubles also have windows overlooking the little park, where as the singles, have frosted glass into an airshaft that leads to the kitchen. If the Oxford is full the Carleton is okay, the rooms there vary a lot, not like those cookie cutter us chain hotels, so if you stay there ask to see a room and if you don't like it ask if there is another.

Just so you know what you are getting into, many of the hotels in that neighborhood have porn channels on the TV.

There is a chance that they might be full, considering the British Council conference is just blocks away. |

Ok, so we have it as:

The Hotel Oxford Bar

8 PM (Mexican sense of time)

Saturday, February 24th

Dress: funny hat optional

At last check, it looks like Oaxaca, Chiapas, Tijuana (Fatman?), Toluca, Morelia, DF, Oregon, London, Manchester, Liverpool, and New Mexico will be represented. |
