I'd appreciate information from people who have experience at KU. I've heard quite a few negatives. Are there any pluses? Is faculty housing as bad as some say?

Just like most places, some people are happy with the flats, others couldn't wait to get away from them, like me. My building was infested with roaches, others are fine. Some building are full of screaming children running the halls all day and night, others are peaceful.

The advantages are that the flats are large and if you teach on campus, it is convenient. Also, they are furnished so you don't have to worry about shopping for furniture and such. If you are teaching in one of the departments located off the main campus, you will probably want to move closer to where you teach. With the scary traffic there, it is best to spend as little time as possible on the roads. Shocked

My understanding is that only temporary guest flats are furnished not the permanent flats. After you are moved into permanent housing you are given a housing allowance and must buy your own things. Isn't that right? Anyone out there with comments on KU in general, positives and negatives?

It's a not a bad place to work. Better than a lot of other places around the Gulf. I'm reasonably content.[/quote]

I am having a very positive work experience here. I used to work at the University of Qatar English Unit. It was, in my day, a great place to work but the salaries were really low, so I quit. I thought I could never find as good a work environment as the one I left behind at U of Q. (Our Qatari director was a real doll.)

I've been here at KU since I quit. At first, I kept comparing my job here to the one I left behind but gradually I got used to it. As I've been reading the threads about U of Q, I am sure glad I left. People here are for the most part pretty friendly. Lots of good professional development and co-operation. It's really multinational, lots of people from everywhere. Salaries are pretty good. Facilities are OK but most importantly, the support is good. Sure there are petty grievances in most departments but we are treated reasonably well. I don't have to deal with subterfuge or crooked management types. No spies in my department. Basically, if you get to work in one of the good faculties, you'll be OK. On campus accomodation isn't too bad if you've got a family. Lots of faculty support.
