I'd like to get into translation work on the side. Anyone have experience or information about doing this? Lke names of international companies that need translators, or average pay? |

Check out www.translatorscafe.com
I've done this on the side for several years- can be a nice earner from time to time, but unless you put a lot of time into it, it's irregular.
Set up a paypal account, and try to apply for work internationally. Another option is to look for local companies that need translation work, but they often have no idea what the work is worth. (and want to pay far less.)
Depending on how technical a document is, and how soon they want it, I usually charge between $0.06 and $0.12 per word, Spanish to English. If you're new, they don't know you, and you can't provide references for previous translation work, you may want to start lower.
Try asking at language schools, too, as they frequently get requests for this kind of work, but often don't offer the service.
Good luck,

From my side it depends on whether or not you are doing the translation work for a business or an individual. Depending on the work I either charge a flat rate or a typical .08 cents per word.
Charge a higher fee for documents that have legal or medical terminology as these are more time consuming.
A flat rate should be anywhere from $30 USD - $60 USD per page depending on the document (i.e. I charge $30 for a simple birth certificate) , but if youre doing work in Peru you may want to adjust your rate.
Have a friend call some of the businesses around and ask for prices, then you can get an idea of what price range you should be in. |
