I've thought about teaching for a while and I've been reading posts on this forum for a while - and now I've finally quit my job (as an accountant...), started subbing, and enrolled in the ITTO course starting June 4th. I booked my flights yesterday, and now that it's all becoming real, it's also becoming a little scary. But anyway, I'm hoping to settle down in Guadalajara and want to get in touch with people who are already there or will be going. If anyone needs a flatmate, I want to hear from you too!

Well good for you for taking the plunge!

I notice that your location is Norway, is that Norway the country or like Norway, Iowa or something. I just wanted to let you know that non native speakers do not have the easiest time of it teaching English legally in Mexico. Immigration asks employers to justify why the foriegn person they are hiring is more qualified than a Mexican for the job. We've had some very good applicants recently who were from Colombia, Cuba, and Spain. Even though they are highly qualified and spoke great English, we can't hire them because there are also highly qualified Mexicans over whom they hold no advantage.

If you are from a town called Norway, then disregard all of this.

Hey, I live alone so I'm not exactly looking for a flatmate but I'm always looking for new people to invite to my barbecues! (which I usually throw once every 3 or 4 weeks) I've been living in Guadalajara for 3 years now. Just let me know once you're down here and I'll invite you to the next one.

I'm always up for a Sunday PS2 fest too. Beer and PS2 with friends all day long.... incredibly nerdy but still fun. hehe

MamaOaxaca - unfortunately my location is the country Norway...I do realise that I'll have a harder time than you native speakers getting a job, but I'm hoping that my high school diploma from an international school and university degree from Australia will help me on my way. Plus I'm counting on ITTO to keep their word and get me a job. Other than that I'm hoping for a fair share of luck! If you have any more useful information regarding this, that would be great.

Just be wary about ITTO's promise of finding you a 'job'. Sure, they'll find you something, but don't just accept the first thing they come up with as it will probably be bottom of the pile stuff. There are quite a few threads about this on the forum, and make sure you don't undersell yourself

I agree it might be more difficult to find a job since you are from Norway, but I don't think it will be impossible. For example, the director of english studies at my school is from the Netherlands and last year we also had a teacher from the Netherlands. Both have (or had, in the teachers's case) an FM3.

Yeah I wouldn't be too worried about Norway not being acceptable for Immigration. Here at Huatulco immi I don't think the bright stars who work there would clue in that Norway isn't an English speaking country.

By the way what is PS2?

I've actually been to Norway, Iowa, a town with a population of about 650. There is also a Norway in Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, South Dakota, North Dakota and the largest with a pop around 3,000 is in Michigan. Other midwestern states such as Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri and Ohio (which is only boarder line midwest IMHO) do not have a Norway. Minnesota doesn't have a town named Norway, but does have a lake with that name (they do have 10,000 lakes you know).
What does all this say? Not sure, but I suspect immigration patterns are involved.

I wouldn't call the Playstation 2 an 'older model' just yet. I'd call the Playstation 3 the 'new' and incredibly overpriced model. (10,000 pesos in Mexico the last time I checked)

Give the Playstation 3 a couple years to mature before shoving the PS2 in with the 'older' systems.

Totally off topic but there is a Mexico, New York that got 9 feet of snow last week!
