I am considering going freelance in the Czech Republic. How do I go about registering myself?? What are the pitfalls? How much more can I earn in one hour than I would earn in a standard school?

You need a zivnotensky list. And local connections. A reasonable level of Czech helps.

You can go freelance-ish by simply turning up and working without registering yourself. some of the smaller schools accept that teachers may want to 'take care' of their own tax. If youre a good teacher and dont mind travelling a few hours a day, you could clear 30-35,000 krowns/month. That's at 250 for a 45 min lesson.
You couldnt get away with it indefinitly but up to the start of a new tax year certainly.
Dont know how you feel about that since it may come back to haunt you later.
I'm not worried, I'm in China.

That's pretty bold - to openly give information recommending tax-dodging on a fairly large scale, for an inividual. 30-35,000 kc/monthly would be most definitely in the upper income bracket for an individual in the Czech Rep.
Practically speaking, if you're in the Czech Rep for a six-month binge, you might get away with such a thing. But morally speaking, that's building up some pretty bad karma. I think these things OFTEN come back to bite.....unless, I guess, you're ready to skip to China. Rolling Eyes

I wouldnt say tax evasion is a karmic issue , more of a moral responsibility, but hey, I didn't say i DID it , simply that it COULD be done.Actually, thinking 'bout it, I knew a guy who was clearing nearly that officially - some of the schools will pay top dollar for good teachers, but don't look for it at Caledonian or Arse linguam.

I smell a DOS. This is complete BS.
250 per 45 minute lesson means you'd be teaching 6 contact hours a day to get 30,000. Add another hour a day to get 35,000. Simple mathematics. Then when you take into account no classes on friday afternoon that means mon-thursday 8 contact hours a day. Add in a "few hours of travel" and the fact that the classes will be both morning and evening (there are very few classes from noon-4) we're looking at a person being on the go and rushing all over the city from 7 am to 9 pm - a nice 13 hour day.

I'm doing something similar, but I ALSO get full medical, sick pay and 5 weeks holiday plus state holidays paid. Plus an internet connection, unlimited photocopying, free office supplies and a few other extras. My car and many other "expenses" like phone calls are tax deductible, so essentially the government pays for it. So that 30,000 - 35,000 goes farther for me than it would for an illegal, especially when flu epidemics strike. One year I took 20 days of sick leave to care for family members.

I'll be honest and say it has less to do with being a teacher and more to do with time management. As a teacher I would say I'm "average". It would be IMPOSSIBLE for a "good" teacher to prepare "good" lessons for so many different ability groups every day 7 hours a day with a few hours of travel time. You'd stay up to midninght or later every night preparing.

Whatever you do, don't let employers exploit you.

Never do anything that's clearly illegal. That's just stupid. If you do something that's borderline make damn sure you know what you're doing and what you will do if it hits the fan.
