Excellent post Lee. I think it's a great idea to keep everybody updated on what's going on with ESL salaries in Mexico. I arrive in Guadalajara on August 23rd. As soon as I get info on salaries in GDL I'll edit this post and start listing them as I come across them.

I worked in Tampico on contract with a starting salary of $12,000 a year and finished 5 years later at about $15,500. |

Most schools here in Merida pay wages by the hour rather than a yearly salary. Could you estimate how much per hour you were making on a salary of $15,500? Before or after taxes? Aguinaldo included in that figure? Benefits such as vacation pay, health insurance, etc.?
You mentioned in another post that Tampico is growing rapidly and that there's money in that city. Those factors often indicate a rather high cost of living. In your opinion, can one live well/comfortably/adequately/poorly there on a salary of $15,500 per year? |

I assume we are talking 15,500 American dollars and not Mexican pesos.
Is this correct? |

I found my last contract when I was going through my boxes the other day. Yes, the figure was American dollars, but it was closer to 18, before taxes. I think it maybe worked out to something like $12,000 pesos a month when the exchange rate was good. An hour? No earthly idea. As long as the paycheque was in the bank and seemed reasonable, I never did the math. But I can tell you that we had 25.5 teaching hours each week and 30 contract hours, so extra assignments to fill in the time.
Mexico was only my second post, first being Chile, and both were contract positions. I have never had the financial stability or peace of mind to leave my home for ah hourly wage, it is just too unsettingly and unseemly for me, like you could be fired any minute, or let go because there weren't enough hours. I watched that happen to friends. Plus with the contract came the perks, round trip airfare, housing, etc. I lived very comfortably, had phone, internet, and cable in the house. I never touched my air conditioner though, too expensive. But I did have one, supplied by the school. I had enough money to enjoy myself socially and get my teeth fixed. |
