Hope everyone is okay. Judging from the news, it looked pretty bad. Curious though, what do the schools generally do in situations like this? Do the schools offer any type of assistance to the teachers if their work or home gets flooded? I'd feel bad if anyone was left out on their own from a disaster like that. |

Have any teachers in Jakarta or the surrounding areas been affected by the floods?
The pictures in the media show a bad situation in Jakarta with water up to the chest in some cases!
How have any of you folks been affected, including those teachers teaching at St.Laurensia, located in the suburbs of Jakarta?

The suburb you refer to is Alam Sutera which stayed high and dry throughout the disaster. As usual, it was mainly the poorer areas near riverbanks that suffered the worst damage - although the posh end of Kemang in Jakarta was also flooded this time.
The burghers of Alam Sutera had nothing worse to contend with than an ATM that didn't work and a loss of mains water for a few hours when a pump flooded.
I am curious to know whether BIS was flooded as a foetid water course runs right past their campus. |

Kelapa Gading was flooded from Friday morning till Wednesday with power out from Saturday morning till Wednesday morning.
Yesterday was clear.
Today is flooded again, but at least we still have power - for now. |

I saw a picture in a newspaper (the Jakarta Post) of 2 men hanging off a lamp post. Most people would would at that and think, "Oh my God. They are hanging on for life!"
Nope - that's their 3rd climb up from jumping off. They're having a great time.
Most of the city is uneffected. One of my schools was closed for 2 days. I had no flooding in my house whatsoever (Roksi area) |

It's great to see that you are settling into your new life in Jakarta, and that you are reasonably happy here. I hope this continues.
With EF, you are on the first rung of a very long ladder - we all had to start somewhere. It's a perfect place to do a year if you are passing through. Also, it's a good place to decide if this is what you want to do. If it is, then you can then make your way up the ladder.
The exception to this rule of progression is Happy_me. He has been here forever, yet he is the only person who complains about poor contracts, the price of bottled gas, and the cost of buying powdered milk!
