|
|
My husband and I are thinking of going to the UAE to teach. We've taught in South Korea for 3 years and really liked it. There's only one problem here. While my husband is a native speaker of English, I am not. I have a degree in English from a non-English speaking country, have taught English in Korea and I am working towards my teacher's certificate in the US. I don't have a strong accent. Actually, most Americans think I was brought to the US when I was young. Again, while teaching in Korea I didn't have any problems being non-native. Is it going to create any problems in getting teaching jobs in the UAE though?
Thanks in advance. |

D-Girl,
What nationality are you?
When it comes to teaching English in the UAE these small points matter.
Does your hubby have an idea of where he wants to work?

| There are non-native English teachers in the UAE but as you don't mention qualifications or experience other than South Korea, no one can help you. |

I am originally from Russia, but I am American by passport. We were thinking of Dubai, but will be glad to look at other places. |

Sorry I didn't provide more info. I have an MA in English as a Foreign Language from Russia. I am working towards an ESL teacher's certificate in the US (I have experience teaching in the US as well). My husband has a JD from an American University. I believe, he has much better chances of finding a good job in the UAE. I am worried about myself though.

If I were you I would apply for posts and see what happens. I know quite a few NNS teachers here, for example at UAEU. If you have post MA experience you could well be OK.
I'm not familiar with the Russian education systerm but I know that in many central European countries an MA represents 5 years of full time study. Just make it clear on your application exactly what you have studied and what your teaching experience is. |

| Go for the bigger employers such as HCT, UAEU. Then you stand more chance of both getting jobs. If your husband gets a post before you come here and you need to look for something on arrival you might find adjunct (=hourly paid) work at the HCT wherever you wind up. I know of NNS teachers who did that while finishing a qualification, then got a full time post afterwards. |

Thanks again. I'll research about HCT and UAEU. |
