We are opened to anything-we are in the early stages-trying to weigh are options and decide where we would like to be, end etc. We had thought somewhere in Asia (though the Japan thing was carried away) because we heard you could save money there. Europe is a possibility because I have citizenship and can work in the EU-would save some of the trouble if we both needed jobs. I heard it was hard to save money in Central and South to save money-is this true? To answer your other question-my degree is in counseling and I work with children-I am working towards my certification for school currently.

I never had any intentions of TEACHING in an international school-my degree is in Counseling, an area that I have over 5 years of experience in and I am working on my certification currently. I want to work as a guidance counselor.
Like the others, I know nothing about counseling jobs here in Japan, but I can tell you this much.

In Japan, counselors in regular schools (public and private) are few and far between. That's because of the culture, where regular teachers seem to fill that role.

I suggest you look at the link I gave you, contact a few of the schools that are in English, and ask around to see what the situation is for international schools here.

Ha, maybe you could save if you had a job in a real international school but in a language school you will probably earn $500-1000 a month. That is what I have gathered from postings on Dave's and what posters have stated.

I would say your chances are 0% at working at a university in Japan as a counselor.

How interested are you in teaching English? Are you only interested in teaching English if you can't do anything else overseas?

Here in Turkey, the expensive private schools have counselors. However, they are all local Turkish speaking counselors.

Kate,

I am going through the process of either applying to Intl School for Sept 2007, or heading back to the USA to get teaching credentials and then try again for the Intl Schools at a later time.

Some quick questions for you:
-how much time do you have before finsihing your teaching credentials?
- have you contacted some of the major Recruiters, ie Search Associates, ISS, CIS, etc.. and let them tell you exactly where you stand? As for me, they all gave me constructive advice to help me decide on what I should do.

If you are interested in teaching for Fall 2007 (might be tight), you should be looking into the Maryland ISS Job Fair in June 2007, and submit all the info to be accepted to the fair.

Just some ideas/questions

That is very helpful-I didnt know they were having a job fair in June and I am very close to Maryland. I tried to contact ISS last week but as it is high recruitment time they were off at other fairs around the country so I am waiting until Monday to hear from them. I actually didnt see that fair on the website so that is great info. As far as CIS I havent researched that at all-but will now. Starting in 2008 would be fine with me-I have a lot of things to tie up in the States-a house etc and finishing certification etc. Anyway-you've been very helpful-I will know what to ask on Monday when I talk to them!!

HI Kate,

Glad the info was useful... it will be even more useful to know the COrrect fair in June is run by Search Associates

http://www.search-associates.com/associates/fair_info.cfm

BETHESDA FAIR 2007
Hyatt Regency Hotel
Dates: 20-22 Jun, 2007
Organizer: Sally Gordon

I have heard these last fairs are for less experienced candiates...the schools are a bit desperate at the end of the hiring season...

If by any chance you speak with/email Sally Gordon, and she doesn't seem to like your qualifations, try contacting the UK Search Associates- them seem to be more flexinle- and might be able to sign you up fo rthe June Fair. PM me if this doesnt make sense.

Bon courage!

Haha-yes that should make a difference!! I may be targeting the following school year as my qualifications will be up to standard at that point..(more options in the future) but I wouldnt mind attending a fair to get a feel for the process. Thanks again-exactly the type of info I am looking for!!

Many of the poshest schools in Ecuador do have guidance counselors- mostly local, Spanish speaking, and incompetent. There are a few really good ones- but many are charlatans who happen to be related to the director...

Not a good country for counseling..

Best,
Justin

Well I would guess that about 50 percent of the counselors in the United States are not very competent in myu experience. When I was preparing for college the counselor was not too competant. He seemed to know less about college admissions than I did.
