So what kind of visa do I need, then?

As an American, first you need a bachelor's degree. With that, you can get a "Specialist in Humanities/International Services" visa to work at an eikaiwa. If you go with one of the Big 4, they will make all the arrangements for you. If you want to work for a dispatch company as an ALT, you still need the bachelors, but you will get an "Instructor" visa. Again, the company will make the arrangements.

Is that a work visa? Is there a 30 year age cap on that?

Good. Again, sorry to ask all these basic questions, but I didn't really think much about this whole visa thing before. I didn't occur to me that there might be a problem.

That explains the rejections. Do you mind telling us where you're from, how old you are and how much EFL experience you have. This will determine whether or not any of the companies will take you.

I don't have a bachelor's degree (yet), but I was still contacted by the organizations I sent my application to.

1.) Does the country you are from have a Working Holiday Visa arrangement with Japan?
2.) Are you due to graduate in the near future?
