I am 43 and about 60% bald. I have heard in Mexico that over 30 is over the hill, and there is age discrimination. Should I just shave my head completely and shine it up good with vaseline? Or wear a hat?

There is age discrimination here but it really doesnt seem to apply to foreign, native-speaker EFL teachers, probably because they dont expect us to be here long-long term. I am 42 and have been here 3 1/2 years. We have another guy here at my school who is 40.

We've had several people at the DF get-togethers 40 and over, so its no big deal.

Bald is relatively uncommon here (one advantage to those Native American genes) but I dont think anyone cares about it.

what about big noses? I have a big nose, like a hawk, because I am half Italian and half Armenian. Armenians are famous for having big hawk noses.

We start to worry about applicants being too old when they are 60, so 42 is no problem. We have 2 baldies at the moment, and one is 35! But a big nose, no way no how, you're not getting a job with me! Laughing

One time I bet my hair with my girlfriend over the winner of the Jaguares - Santos match. Through some miracle, the Jaguares won so I shaved my head. The director of the school and my Mexican mother both freaked. Mi mama told me shaved heads were for alcoholics in rehab or criminals. I guess the former was true because there was drinking involved in the bet. The students at the school thought it was cool but the young girls said they probably would not date a bald man.

You shouldn't have any problems with your age or your hair style if you are a good English speaking teacher candidate.

Also, are young Mexican girls in Mexico often looking to marry foreigners in order for the papers? I know here in Union City, NJ, I have dated atleast 12 hispanic girls only to be asked after a month or so of dating whether I would be willing to:

a. sponsor her for her papers for the going rate, which, in New Jersey, is currently $10,000, OR

b. sponsor her for the papers since we are truly in love and if she gets deported we would be heart-broken.

Depressing is the nice way to put it! I became a fan b/c that is where I first lived (in Torreon) and I can't just jump around...once a fan...I'm loyal. Plus...I think there is something in my personality that seeks out teams such as Santos...I'm also a Toronto Maple Leaf fan (who are still better than Montreal! Wink

) I'm also a Buffalo Bills fan....hmmm...I'm really starting to see a (sad) pattern!

Last Wed. I went to the Santos vs. Pumas game and was super excited when Santos were actually WINNING!!!! Alas...they stayed true to form and lost 2-1 Sad

Actually, I was living in Chiapas trying to be contrary with my girlfriend. The Jaguares were on a terrible losing streak and I though Santos was a sure bet. I'm really glad I lost because she would have looked terrible bald.

Talk about fair weather fans - when I came to Chiapas I was excited they had a professional team but no one here was enthusiastic at all because the Juguares were losing. Later, when they were in the finals, the people went crazy with everyone wearing orange.

Let's just remember...getting to the playoffs are one thing...and then losing to the 8th placed team is another thing...opps ....another hockey tangent Laughing

Jaguares have no hold in my mind....so I have no idea when it was that you made this bet..all I know is if it was in the last two years....poor santos (and me!)

I find it interesting that no one in Chiapas was interested until playoffs...my friends in torreon are like me with hockey....we keep expecting miracles! Smile
