Hi Everyone,
anyone know when interviews are scheduled for PNET candidates? I would like to have a rough idea just so I can plan advance...
Thanks,
Saigo |

I can only give you the time line for my own application process but that was in 2002 so things might have changed.
I applied in Jan/Feb and got an interview in April. I heard I had passed the interview in May and finally got a school at the beginning of July.
It is a very long drawn out process and you must be prepared for that so don't jump the gun and give up your job until you actually get the school as it still takes weeks after that for all the paperwork to be completed |

ann, do you remember when they actually contacted you about the April interview? (I'd be grateful to hear of anyone else's experience too.)
I'm wondering how much advance notice of an interview they give you, particularly for people who'd have to travel some distance to HK for it. |

I've never actually heard of anyone having to travel to Hong Kong for an interview. Mine was in England and I know others were held in Australia and Canada. One person I was talking to last week actually had a video conference for an interview. I suppose it actually depends on the number of candidates who are applying from the one country. |

Last year (or was it the year before????) I was told that some EMB people were in Canada 'recruiting'.
Lots of my colleagues had interviews in their home country - recruiting companies were hired by EMB to undertake the process. So yes, if you're from UK, Oz, Canada, there would be interviews in your country. Not sure how it works for New Zealanders but interviews must be convenient for them as there are quite a few NZ NETs. |

I'm in Japan, and applicants based there most definitely have to travel to HK if they get an interview. (Well, I'd certainly prefer that over going back to the UK ) I'd expect that anyone elsewhere in Asia would also be in the same boat as I think the overseas (i.e. not in HK) interview locations offered are just in the UK, Canada, Aus and NZ.
Thanks for the replies anyway though.
Can anyone on the NET scheme now or previously who did travel to HK for interview remember how much notice they got of the interview? |

I had similar experience to the others already posted. Applied Jan, 2004. Was contacted around April saying they wanted to interview me, and finally had the interview in May.
Surprisingly, given the amount of time it took them to arrange the interview, it only took a couple of days after the interview to tell I was accepted.
The interview was via video-link, though I did have to travel to Auckland for it.
iirc, they set up the video-link in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
They've readvertising for PNETs, with the deadline now being March 2nd, so I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for an interview in the near future. |

I just checked the EMB website and they still have the Jan. 22 deadline posted...where did you see the extension for the NET application deadline?
Should those of us who have recently applied be thrilled about this apparent desperation on the part of EMB? hmmm...
or: conversely, if we don't get an interview should we be terribly depressed? |

Hi there...
I have an interview next month in Toronto. Being that I'm an American living in the US at the moment, I had to choose between Toronto and Vancouver as the 2 closest interview sites. Last year I had to travel from Japan to HK only to be turned down for a position as a PNET. Hopefully I'll have better luck this year! Both times I was given about a month notice before the interview date. Also, last year I received a 1,000 HK dollar travel re-imbursement for my trip frpm Japan to HK. It's not a lot, but it's better than nothing!
By the way, do any current or past NET people have any advice about the interview and/or essay that interview-ees have to do? Any help/advice would be appreciated by hopefully more than just me.
Thanks, Rob |

I see the reason for the confusion: the March 2 deadline is for NETs within the VTC.
The deadline did not change for applications to the NET program within the EMB. |

I sent my application for PNET in late December and I just received an email from them yesterday, asking to select a date and time for a first interview via phone. (by the way, I live in the USA and the email was from Canadian Education Centre Network, who are responsible for interviews for Canadian and American applicants.) After the phone interview, they will arrange a second in-person interview in Canada, and the email states that the processing time will be 3 months after the 2nd interview. Earliest start date is August 2007. |

Robsam, thanks for posting this. I'm in a bit of a pickle because If I get the face-to-face interview, I'll be in Japan during that time and working. I'd love to work for PNET, but I don't like the idea of flying to HK just for an interview - that may not result in a job, especially if it means possibly jeopardizing my current job in Japan.
Can you tell me if your interview took place on a weekend?
And do you have any ideas as to why you didn't succeed?
I'd like to be pretty sure I'd have a shot before going to all the trouble.
Thanks. |

Hi there,
About my interview last year...
I was invited to HK in March and the interview was on a Monday. They gave me about a month notice and the interview day/time was given to me by the EMB. There was very little chance of changing the day/time of the interview.
I was in the JET Program in Japan last year and lucky for me I already had vacation time requested for the date that they gave me, but that was just a lucky coincidence. However it was during the time of year that is in-between school years in Japan so I probably would have been able to get the time off anyway.
As for why I was turned down...
Not too sure because I was really confident that I would get the job in the first place. I have a couple of theories though. One is that I screwed up the essay portion of the interview. I wrote very quickly and it was really messy looking, so I started to re-write the essay when time ran out. I did think that the interview itself went OK, but who knows?
Also I've heard/read that the EMB/NET Scheme doesn't fully accept the JET Program as real teaching experience since JETs are considered "assistant teachers". I think the jobs are similar, but the NET Scheme is a more intensive program since NETs are at only one or two schools where many JETs are at several schools. (I taught at 12 elementary schools, 4 Jr Highs and a kindergarten!)
Finally I have a sneaking suspision that they don't like Americans that much in NET Scheme. I could be totally off base with this, but it's curious that no interviews are done in the US. For better or worse, I am an American and even though it's a source of embarassment these days (not trying to be political here...just my own feelings) I am still confident that I would make a great teacher in HK or anywhere for that matter.
So, my advice to you is to go for it, if you can get the time off work and afford the airfare from Japan to HK! The EMB will give you a 1000 HK dollar travel reimbursement. Last year, mine took months to finally arrive, but that's another story!
Well, if anyone wants to comment or on what I've said here or has any advice about the interview, please feel free. Please remember that what I wrote here is my opinion and I could be totally wrong, but they are just my opinions.
Good luck! Rob |
