Hi everyone!
I am living and teaching in Mexico City. I am a vegetarian and I am beginning to find my options for healthy eating are limited. Can anyone PLEASE tell me if they know of a grocery store anywhere that sells the veggie fake meat, tofu, veggie burgers, or organic products? I love the food here in Mexico but I need my veggie products! Thanks in advance to all that reply! |

Polanco and Condesa have Superamas and Sumesas that have veggie items. |

Where do you live?? Seriously..check out the nearst walmart.
That is where I shop as it's close (both of 'em!) I can get veggie meat (made chili for the first time last weekend..if you're hungry...come on over!) and that is where I get my veggie burgers from (the mushroom/cheese ones in the freezer section are better than the ones in the cheese section) and there is also a veggie sausage (but I do NOT like it...so spend your money on your own terms for that one!)
Seriously though...I"m here for trading recipes and/or for coming over for a meal (but you also need to like dog hair...it's not in the food [at least I try to keep it out!] but I do have a dog who enjoys getting rid of her hair!) |

Hi there!
Thanks! I live on Felix Cuevas and the nearest Walmart doesnt carry any of that stuff! Which area of the city do you live in? And which section of Walmart is all of this veggie meat in? I would love to exchange recipes and meet for dinner one day... even if there is dog hair in it. I am used to pet hair as a condiment in my food. Hahaha! Anyhow.. thanks for the reply! |

I have NO idea where you are. Supposedly I live in Coyoacan...honestly I still do not have it straight! (I'm not from a place where you cross-reference steests or anthing else for that matter!)
But if you're in town..come out saturday!! The veggie meat I found made a good chili. The burgers still don't satisfy the meat craving I somtimes get (in regards to the ones from home) but they are good. As I said..the sausage is better left in walmart!
Lately I have not been able to find the mushroom/cheese burgers that are better than the simple veggie ones I was originally getting...but then I went to the 'old' Walmart (for me...that means I went S rather tHan N...it's nearly the same difference) and they were stocked up on the 'good'ones. |

To clarify....I don't live 'in' coyoacan'....the heart of all the funky hippie stands and puppies (thank god I've never been there with enough $...otherwise tequila would have a brother by now....sorry mama).
I live 'outside' the heart...between M.A de Q and Coplico.
Any time you want to come by...I have both tequilas (the one you pet ....my dog...fear not!....and the kind you drink!)
You are more than welcomed! |

I don't know very much about DF (my in-laws all call it defectoso ) but in the parts of Mexico I do know, primarily in the state of Oaxaca and Morelia, Michoacan, you don't buy that kind of stuff in the supermarket. You buy it at a Tienda Naturalista and the selection is amazing even in small towns. I live in a city of about 75,000 people and I can get at least a dozen soy meat products including dry, fresh, and canned. There are also many very good Vegetarian Mexican cookbooks out there that might give you a better repertoire with the local ingrediates.
I remember there being a fairly large naturalista on a side street off the Alameda near the momumento de Juarez. |

There are two amazing all organic stores in DF, called The Green Corner, one in Condessa and the other in Polanco.
It's an incredible project that is involved in supporting Mexican sustainable and organic farming projects throughout the country. Ive seen stuff for sale from farms that Ive visited in Veracruz and Tlaxcala state. They also sell a good selection of biodegradable cleaning products, all Mexican made.
The one in Polanco has an adjoining restaurant that will fulfill your cravings for tofu burgers and the like.
When I'm in DF I always take back a few kilos of their coffee (which funny enough they sell Oaxacan organic coffee for cheaper than what it it's sold for in Oaxaca, Oaxaca suffering form Oaxacan logic and all)
Here's the addresses for the Condessa local, I couldn't find a website:
Mazatln 81 local 1 y 2
06140 La Condesa
Mxico DF, Mxico
Telfono: 52863939
Supposedly another one opened in Coyoacan and there are plans for two more in Satelite and Cuajimalpa. |

Thank-you everyone for being so helpful on this! I am going to search today... I will let you all know how it goes. As for Saturday... I will be there! I just need step by step directions to get there since I have the worst sense of direction in the world! Funny I chose to live in Mexico City! |

Hi everyone!!!
Just so you all know the Green Corner was a great suggestion! It has tofu, veggie burgers, soy burgers and a good selection of organic products. Also Walmart does have a good selection of soy protein..or textured vegetable protein which can be found in this small organic section of the Walmart nearest to my house. Thanks to everyone who posted a reply!! |

While I can usually find anything I need locally, it'd be nice to have a mega-type store somewhere within easy travelling distance. This morning we were talking in the coffee room, and decided we need to buy a new electric kettle for making tea. One of the teachers has a friend flying up to Los Angeles for a week and will bring us back one. It seems like a long ways to go just to get a kettle! |

Chorizo de Soya is the best vegetarian food ever. I'm a Carnivore but for some reason I can only stomach Chorizo de Soya and not Pork or Beef Chorizo. Chorizo de Soya is also cheap! (about 6 pesos when I was living in La Paz). I don't know about Mexico City or Guadalajara, but I imagine its just as cheap there. Forget about the Gringo hippy food, it'll be overpriced and past the expiration date if its even available. I know there is a large Arab community in Mexico City, maybe the Arab shops will have some falafel, hummus, etc. Apart from that, try making stuff from scratch. |

Seriously. My novia's dad makes really good soy chorizo, delicious and not all porky and fatty.
One of the best meals I've had in Mexico was at a Lebanese restaurant downtown. I can't remember exactly where, a friend and I just sort of wandered. But... it was fantastic. |
