Can I buy you a pint?
of course. If I didn't know you I'd assume you were a Man U fan. What a silly question. it's a bit like asking HMAF if he will be attending Sunday mass.

I'll be in Balans all Saturday.... (the mrs is away all weekend)

FGT, I have over a decade's worth of SSK payments.... or do I? Confused I guess I should look into it. Have you? Does anyone know of a foreigner claiming a pension?

Pension here would be peanuts. Why would anyone bother?

Even if it's only 10ytl a week, isn't it better to spend someone else's money than your own? If you're planning on staying in Turkey and don't have to pay rent, I reckon the Turkish pension might pay half your outgoings. (BTW I have absolutely no idea of the level of a basic Turkish pension, but it's possible).

Edit: I've just looked on the web and found this:
Quote:
Buna gre en dşk SSK emekli aylığı 481 YTL 44 Yeni Kuruş'a, en yksek aylık ise 862 YTL 17 Yeni Kuruş olacak.
from a year ago.

So the basic pension doesn't quite pay half your outgoings then! Still worth having, though.

Ok so Interlang won't get a work permit but is it worth accepting their offer so can gain experience and can lok for better jobs as they seem to be easier to find when in Turkey?
If not which schools should i contact?

To Miss Pinky-
Of course, there are schools and unis which run on the legal "straight and narrow" and those schools will be much more fussy about who they hire. What do you have for teacher qualifications?

Keep in mind that there is good experience and bad experience. If one works at a bucket shop where teachers come in at the last moment, there is no exchange of ideas, and no teacher development, then the experience isn't worth much. Those hiring for "better" schools will probably have this figured out. I knew a guy in Korea who always boasted he had taught "for twenty years!" there. His shi* was very well polished shi* indeed...but it was still shi* Rolling Eyes

English First, Suadiye is straight. But they are picky about who they hire, I think.

Check TEFL.com. There is an ad there for the English Centre in Şişli. I worked there for three years. I can't say about their money/visa situation but, if it hasn't changed, it is a good place to learn a few things yourself.

What say you, Dmb? EC or Interlang?

Presently the teachers at the Eng. Centre aren't being paid on time.

I wouldn't touch them with a 100 foot stick.

ET and Int. may be sh%^ but at least they are consistent in their payments.

'Dude.

Since we were at the EC things have gone waaaaaay bad. Dude is correct about late payment. tekirdag, remember when it was busting at the gut on every floor.. well most of those floors have now gone. It's gone downhill since we left. As for interlang, it's gone downhill too. Dershanes used to be the best gig in town. now they are the worst.Sorry Molly, but the deals on offer at any language school are just not what they used to be.

It seems the language schools in Istanbul are going the way of their Italian and Spanish counterparts ... in that they know they can still get teachers even if they pay too little for them to get by on ...

An Italian farmer recently told me he paid his grape pickers more than the schools in Rome are paying the TEFLers there ...

On the other side of the coin, I remember when ITU was considered a good package. $1000 and accom, etc.

Now a $1000 is crap.

If you factor in the accom, and the low contact hours on some of the courses, it exceeds FGT's magic 25 YTL / hour ...

And that's before considering the hols ...

Still, I'm told that as those that depart are no longer being replaced, the number of NS's there is being whittled down ...

It'd be handy if you had a pet elephant.

speaking of elephants... well hairy mammoths. I watched Ice age 2 yesterday. It's brilliant. I seriously recommend it. It's even better than Nemo.
