It's been in the news a lot recently in the UK about immigration. The government spends about 100 million pounds a year on translation in various languages for the police , courts and social services etc. Many people think a language exam is a good idea to help intergration. Some exam would have to be taken to first enter the country on a spouse visa or to gain residency or passport. Better to spend the money on setting up language classes than paying for translation.
In Japan, it's very different ofcourse. the level of immigration is much lower and the governments policy on immigaration is different. But should the government in Japan introduce tests for people who want to extend their visa, get PR etc?

I think your comparison is wrong. In the UK language tests would be for those who wanted citizenship. I think most of the foreigners you are referring to aren't those looking for Japanese citizenship, but residence.

There was some talk on the BBC about language tests for the many people from the Indian sub-continent who come to the UK through arranged marriages. Some politicans are considering that too.
Obviously, the two cases, UK and Japan are almost impossible to compare. But sometimes the number of foreigners here who don't make any effort to learn Japanese is embarrasing.

I think if two people want to get married, they shouldn't have to take a language test to be able to live their partner. Rolling Eyes

You'll have to tell us a little more about what is being proposed in the UK. I find it a little difficult to know what your question is exactly.

Obviously tourists don't need to take language exams, so it is not simply about admission to the UK or to Japan. Do you mean those getting working visas. If so what are the rules/proposals regarding this in the UK? Are you talking about residence? Are you talking about citizenship?

The thing I saw on the BBC was all a bit vague, not sure if there has been any bills proposed or anything. Have to have a look on the BBC website in a minute.

Ok, if you could summarize the issue/provide a link it will be easier to respond to your poll.

Cheers

The thing I saw was on the "video and audio" part of the site. The piece in question doesn't appear to be there any more. So I have no idea, sorry.
