Back to topic...Ha'anala...Good for you for trying to have a go at the language before you get there! However, before you invest in a course or books or tapes or whatever, think about this:
Are you sure you'll be staying in Czech for good? There are so many jobs in the region, you just may find yourself in an entirely different country.
Second, What's your goal here? Do you want to speak Czech well enough to go to university there, or do you simply need to "get by"? I've had several friends who did extended stints in Prague (more than 2 years) and they picked up a great deal of the language in that time. Czech people can be quite forgiving and helpful to those struggling to learn their toungue. What my friend did was to take a couple months worth of evening courses after they got there (the schools they worked for provided the lessons to teachers free of charge). Once they had a firm starting point, thry just learned on their own through immersion. In other words, don't stress if you don't know any Chech when you get there. You'll have plenty of time to get your head around it when you get there.
Good Luck! |

SLAVICA publishers used to have a nice selection of books for learning slavonic languages. I do not know if they are still in business.
Rather academic but very thorough. |
