| James S, so because my husband doesn't believe that there are lots of scams happening in China's ESL world, I should leave him? He's just a bit naive. I think the other poster was correct. In my husband's day (he is in his early 40's) teachers were highly respected, school was taken seriously. He just can't imagine that there is much money in running ESL schools, so how would that industry attract many low-lifes? I teach ESL here in New York, but he is in a different field. |

James not sure what you mean here, but the term "colored wolf" used by Chinese does not mean foriegner - it means pervert. I am not saying that the shoe fits in your case, but just in case you missed the meaning there I think that you will find that this is what they mean. |

Sorry, Margot, but you have just made a grievously wrong claim: in your husband's school time teachers weren't "respected" and they aren't respected these days either, full stop. What he is saying is what he had to memorise, and that's pretty much what the school leaders wanted to hear: "We love our motherland China, our teachers and school..."
Tell me - what did your husband ever hear about the Cultural Revolution? |

Apologies for going off topic like this, but...

| RE: "coloured wolf". I know it is not a racial thing. I have heard it used exclusively to describe western men since my arrival in China. |
If that were the exclusive usage of the term then it would indeed be a racial thing. I think that the fact that it is often used to describe western men is both an indication that the glove fits in some cases, but more so because local perspectives of what is 'distasteful' behavior sometimes vary from western perspectives.
The usage of the term is not however restricted to describing westerners, nor is restricted to describing 'bar hopping'. The term for a bar hopper or playboy would probably be 'hua hua gong zi'.

| It does not mean pervert either. It is used to describe a person who likes action and hunts in the bars, at work, on the street, etc. |
To be absolutely accurate it probably doesn't mean either of the above, but its usage can encapsulate what we would call perverted behavior so I do feel that the comparison with the word 'pervert' to be more accurate than limiting the meaning to 'bar hopping'.
Both the terms 'bian tai' and 'se lang' (apologies if my pinyin is inaccurate) are used to describe people, generally in a sexual context, and indicate a perversion in the eyes of the speaker. Of course what is one persons perversion is anothers normal behavior!
However I would agree with you that to equate the too is probably misleading as although I have been called 'se lang' on occasions myself, I doubt a westerner would have used the word pervert in those cases. Really. Trust me on that!
Back to the thread I guess! |

"LeNuovo purchased most of IBM last year"
HFG,
Lenovo purchased the PC division of IBM, a division which made IBM little money and at times lost money for them.
The success of the deal for Lenovo remains to be seen. The commentators suggest that it was a good move on IBM's part, shedding a dog among its divisions.
The PC division of IBM was not important to its core operations. IBM is currently trading at close to US$98/share. Lenovo is selling for about HK$3.23/share. |
