I am a new graduate, and my boyfriend and I want to spend a few years teaching English. We both have certifications and university degrees. The Middle East in one of the places we would really like to go. Does anyone have any recommendations as to good schools that don't require many years of teaching experience? Would it be better to wait a few years and go to other countries first? It seems like more experience is needed, I have just been very excited about getting to that part of the world.
Thanks so much

You do know that in most Middle Eastern countries, co-habitation is at best frowned on, at worst outright illegal?

This issue aside, given your lack of experience and qualifications, to be honest you don't stand much of a chance in any of the Gulf countries, where MAs and years of experience are neccessary. You might be able to turn up something in a language school in Egypt or Syria, but this is not something I feel qualified to speak about.

I think that is a great example of an oxymoron. Laughing

To be serious, if the two of you want to travel and teach for a few years, the Middle East is not your best choice. Get MAs, some experience, and a marriage license and then you're ready for the 'good schools.'

As Cleo says, you could probably go into countries in North Africa and the Levant and pick up some language school work - or a spot with one of the shady international schools, but you may have difficulty covering all the bills. They are also more casual about your living arrangements, but tell them you are married if you plan to live in the same flat. (if you have contracts, you will have to produce your marriage license)

Is the marriage license the same as marriage certificate? I guess marriage license is mostly used in US and Canada, and as far as I know, some US states does not accept or recognize 'marriage license' from another state! So, for the ME, are both 'marriage license' and 'marriage certificate' acceptable? Or depends on each Gulf country?

You could definitely work at Abu Dhabi University in Abu Dhabi, UAE. But I would check out the other posts before applying. And like the others said, living together unmarried is illegal here.

You will be able to work in every Gulf country without an MA. You will need a couple of year expereince though. Why not make the GUlf your last stop before you return to proper jobs.

The marriage certificate won't be a problem if you are working in seperate places. Just pretend. scores of people do it though it s illgal though. That said, as westerners, unless you are in Saudi, you wouldnt be imprisoned.

Westerners have been imprisoned for co-habiting in the UAE. No, it's not common at all, but whether you would or wouldn't, no-one can say.

Definitely correct, Nadia...

In the cases that I know of, the arrests came about because someone turned them in... an angry neighbor perhaps?

In one well-known case it was the ex-husband... Laughing

And employers have terminated contracts when they have learnt of unmarried couples living together, even if they do have officially separate accommodation, because the employer cannot be complicit in breaking the law.

No... it is making clear that when people on this board tell unmarried couples that it doesn't matter if they live together because many do it... they are not completely accurate.

Nadia, Afra, and I are sharing situations that have occurred. We named no names. There was no gossip...

But men's gossip is more interesting. We gossip about more important things- like sport. Very Happy

for example:
gents, did you hear that Eto'o (where does that apostrophe go?) might be heading towards Anfield in the summer?
