Over a 40-year period, I've spent a total of three weeks out of my valuable life in Toronto. I therefore know everything there is to know about Toronto.
My conclusion: It is the pits and sucks the big one. Hong Kong is superior in every way. |

You're missing out.
In Toronto, people chew with their mouth open, sneeze and cough with their mouth open, and walk like Ronald MCDonald with their feet slapping the ground.... all the while talking about ....yep...making money.
I''ll take the Pigeon Brain Stew to go. |

Yes I said I was utterly relieved that HK wasn't half as bad as some of the stories had lead me to believe. But I never mentioned the word genuine.
It's true, I don't feel a vibe of aggression here - people seem so coccooned in their own little worlds (of material concerns more likely than not) but that doesn't bother me. I'm under no illusions about the plastic/shallow aspects of this culture.
But just let me say 2 things:
1. Before I moved here I asked the advice of ex-pats on a well known site. It was regarding the chances of my partner finding work in the field of mechanics in HK. My query was treated not only with laughable contempt by an ex-pat, but he actually verbally abused me on that forum, saying 'tell your partner to get some F***ing qualifications. In fact, ditch the boyfriend, how do you expect to socialise with a f***ing mechanic in tow?"
This remember, was a supposedly 'friendly' forum of expats.
2. I agree with the previous poster regarding the safety of HK. Two weeks before moving here my son was badly assaulted by 3 boys older than him (in England). I don't need to go into the details. It's just the kind of thing that happens, frequently, in the UK.
The police took 3 days to actually come round and interview him.
So.. it's really a trade off. I can live with plastic politeness, the motivation of which isnt important to my own set of ethics. |
