I'm sure the following has been covered sometime before. However, I am curious about paying into my Canadian bank account for debt withdrawals. I have been told(and please correct me if this is wrong), that there is an approximate 4000yen charge for wire transfers from my Japanese bank account to my Canadian account. But I was wondering whether or not online banking avoids that? What I mean is, if my Japanese bank has online banking, can I simply click transfer electronically into my account here in Canada. Essentially I am asking what is the best way to handle paying off my Credit card and monthly loan payment here in Canada from Japan. And lets assume for the moment that I have nobody in Canada to place money in the account for me. I appreciate any and all input.

Peace.

What you should do is sign up with golloyds.

www.lloydstsb.co.jp/

You have to submit a hard copy application (with copies of ID etc), but forms etc are downloadable from their site.

Once that's done, you can transfer money direct to your nominated account via lloyds via Sumitomo ginkou.

Sounds complicated but it's not. And it's cheap, only 2000yen per transfer. I've made numerous transfers like this to my small credit union in Australia and had no problems.

Heya, TOBrian!

I second 6810. Do it. I checked out a bunch of options and that was the one I settled on. Post Office fee is cheaper (although just gone up, I heard), but the rate is not as good. GoLoyds, once set up (which itself is relatively simple) is a simple furikomi. Fast and reasonably priced.

Of course if there ARE better options out there, folks, please post! Very Happy

Re: internet banking... If you're outside a large city and don't have a really good command of Japanese, then I'd have to say that I hope you had better luck than I have. Getting information and then negotiating the paperwork was a fairly tall order out here in the sticks. When asking about signing up for internet banking, people stared at me as if I were asking if I could send my horse to Belgium on a tricycle or something.

Again, if anyone DOES know about internet banking, please post. I'm sure lots of people have the same question.

Re: straight up money transfers, I found this thread too:

Hope that helps.
