No buddy, I'm Canadian... the last bombing we had of any type in Canada was in 1985 when an air india flight was blown up, I think. I was only 8 when that happened, so I can't say I remember that.
Maybe there is something wrong with these places that have frequent bombings? Where I come from it's not a favourite past time to go blowing up people and places. Perhaps the easy to get mary-jane makes us too relaxed for such things.
Anyway, justify living there all you want, but you are lying to yourself if you feel that it isn't a dangerous place. Maybe it is not so dangerous for in-your-face street crime - I agree that I feel less at risk in Jakarta (for crime) than I do in certain areas in Toronto, but street crime is only one aspect, once you factor in travel, natural disasters, disease, moslem/christian/chinese/political tension I think you have to admit that there is a very high potential for danger over there.
By the way, out of 33 countries I have only been robbed once in my life - and that was in Jakarta, not far from Mall Ambassador, a run-by thief snatched my cellular phone out of my hand. Oh yeah, and my motorcycle was stolen there too... and my ACA theft coverage didn't pay out for that one either... wait a minute, maybe my perception of street crime there has to change too.... |

Right, lets see ... the US is out because they had that big drama with those planes flying into buildings - my auntie Cath knows someone who was there at the time... Spain, forget it, ETA... Germany? Didn't they have the Baader Meinhof? Wow, sod that. China is out 'cos they might go to war with Taiwan at any time.... Oh, and there are still some Irish people in London...
Maybe I'll just stay put in good old Sasketchewan... |

At least some of the rogues in China have the common decency to rob you in front of your face.
But you'll still never see them coming... Mostly because they're your emplyers and friends.
You might be safer off at home for a while - travel some for a few months and figure out where you'd like to work then start the job hunt.

Dangerous? sure is!
There should be a large sign at every airport "we have no idea what zebra crossings are for, so please do not use them"
Surabaya is bad, but I like their tennis racquet sized signs, which would-be pedestrians carry in front of them, with STOP written in red. You cautiously step onto a zebra crossing, and hope someone takes notice.
These are best held high in a threatening attitude, and drivers stop as they don't want their car damaged.
Rule of the road at roundabouts - give way to anything bigger than you.
But for all that, drivers are generally courteous to others. |

I'd say Jakarta is safe... Im a single Aussie female.. lived here in 1990 -1995 (the good ol' days) and visited every year for two months until 2004 when I moved back again until now... and dont plan on leaving anytime soon.
As everyone else has mentioned, every city has its baddies and goodies. As a female, I've never experienced any real harrassment from taxi drivers, never been robbed (touch wood) ...maybe cuz I'm fluent in Bahasa, it does help...
As for bombings, riots etc... they can happen anywhere in the world...Spain, America and England just to name a few... my fiancee is part Ambonese, and they had their house burnt down during the conflicts over in Ambon, and the family lost everything and moved to Jakarta.
I think the best way to survive here, is just use common sense... alot of people complain about the way things work here or dont work, and go on and on about all it damn day... all I can say to them is... IF YOU DONT LIKE IT.... GO HOME.... |

which airline would you recommend to fly out, dear?
or perhaps a ferry that doesnt sink.
or a train that doesnt crash.
all of which occur frequently as you well know, compared to the rest of the world.
then there are the bombings, which were (mercifully) not prevallent in 2006.

I agree with you TanyaK. I often say that for its size, Jakarta might well be the safest city in the world. In 10 years here, including during the '98 riots, I've never been seriously threatened. I'm bigger and meaner than the average Indonesian male, so that might have something to do with it. I've often said as well that I'm not afraid of any one Indonesian man, or woman; when they come together in mobs it's a different story.
I also agree with you about surviving here, and about negative expats who go on and on all day long complaining. They bring the rest of us down. Of course the favourite activity of expats all round the world is to complain about the country they're in (read threads on other countries on this site), but some people get way too negative, and they should probably go home at least for a while and get a dose of reality.
You posted a serious question to me a few weeks ago, and I tried to post a serious answer; however, they were both deleted by the internet gods/censors. We can try again, or post me a private message. |

I love how you added in the ", or woman". In my experience they're far more dangerous. Get you in trouble in more ways than you can imagine, if you're not careful.
As for Indonesia being dangerous, I don't think it's so bad if you keep your wits about you and figure out how things work around here. Like knowing that zebra-crossings are simply a waste of paint (I'm sure there's somebody in gov't getting kickbacks on the paint contracts), like knowing your ojek driver may drive on any side of the street he feels like, and that overloaded buses go about 120km on the tolls. Adapting is the key! |

give it a rest chester. the question isnt is transportation safe in indo. i think everyone would agree that the answer is a resounding "NO".
but i think in general this place is safe. in over 10 years here, i have never had a problem and i was here during the riots. but like any city, u have to keep your wits about u. walking in certain sections of the city late at night or blind drunk is asking for trouble. or always insulting people or thinking u are king of the world merely because your skin is white will invite people to hold resentments against u. personally i think the most dangerous people are the fat ingnorant police that bully everyone into giving them money.
petty crimes and non-violent crimes such as stealing are rampant, but for a country this size, there are relatively few violent crimes, especially involving guns. of course the odd motorcycle thief that gets caught will get beaten and burned to death. i cant remember the last time i heard or read about a non police shooting death in jkt. however, if i was in washington, dc a night without a shooting death would make front page news.
crime and bad things happen everywhere. the only difference is that the ones we grew up with seem normal and we never really pay attention to them. if u are that worried that something bad will happen to u, stay home.
and why in the hell would anyone want to give an organization such as i to i a wad of cash? they are only offering a poorly paid job. u can apply at any ef and they will hire u for about the same amount of money. and i have never seen a job advertisement requesting cert from that organization. why not just make one yourself? they hold about the same value and u can save yourself money. either pay the money and get a recongized cert or dont bother. |
