My husband was with me for both births. I don't speak Japanese very well, but it really didn't matter because I chose hospitals that were used to having non-Japanese moms so some nurses could speak English and some could not but they were all good at communicating!
It is true you are recommending to stay for a week. The first birth, I needed it! It was a long difficult labor and the nurses helped me learn all the basics while I was there like how to give a bath and feeding. I had a private room and my husband could visit me any time he wanted. The second time, I left early because the labor was easy and I already knew how to take care of a newborn. So the length of stay is up to you!
I would say, shop around for a good hospital and doctor. You should have a positive experience. Now my kids show off to other kids by saying they were born in Japan. It sounds cool!
Best

It does sound cool..lol.
I think that we will go home because I found the best place to have a baby. http://www.gentlechoicesbirth.com/aboutus.html if you want to see it, if you dont then just dont click on it
When I saw this I decided that home was the best place, I just had a good feeling about this place BUT I will need a prenatal doctor, I wonder if a doctor would do most of the checkups without delivering...? Like do ultrasounds and blood work and such...Do you know? |

Most doctors would be OK with that, either in Japan or in the US. That is pretty common actually. |

Yes, it is no problem finding doctor in Japan to do your prenatal checks.
One reason why I did not return to the US to have my kids was because I would be away so long. Remember you are not encouraged to fly when heavily pregnant, and many airlines won't let you board if you are more than 30-35 weeks or so (but do check because I can't remember the rule) So it means that you have to fly home at 7 or 8 months and wait out the birth at home with your parents or where-ever you are staying.
The good news is that you can fly back with your newborn no problem. Young babies are easy to travel with. I am sure Gordon will agree! Compared to say an 18-month old!
Good luck

Just checked and most airlines prefer that you fly before 35 weeks --most pregnancies last 40 weeks by the way.

| Yes, newborns are a piece of cake especially if you request a baby bassinet for them to sleep in. I'd fly with them as young as 4 weeks, just keep the old ladies (usually its them) from touching them. |

| Yeah, I had looked it up, but I am surprised that they let you travel that late....many women have their babies 5 weeks early...but I heard that if you have your baby on a plane that that baby gets free flights for life..lol...but that may not be true. How long are babies free to travel with? |

A baby can fly on most airlines until they turn 2 as long as they sit on your lap. |

Hee, hee, this thread didn't get derailed, did it? And Quibby, I love that cat too, but I am a biased cat lover. |

Yes, it did, but this topic is guaranteed to draw me in. Yes, as Gordon said you can travel with your baby up to age 2 for free, but I always paid for the seat. It made long distance travel bearable.
Now that my daughter is about to turn 6, we will no longer qualify for early boarding when I am traveling just with her. Boo hoo. That is a great perk.
Sherri
PS-- back to the topic, I used to get 6 weeks of paid vacation, 4 in the summer and 2 at Christmas when I worked at a private language school in Tokyo. |

Still off topic:
I love that cat because it is so ugly, I want one like it because I will always be in a good mood when I see it..but they are like $1500...so I will have to wait until I find a homeless one on the side of the road (oh, they say that those cats are like petting a warm peach...HAHA!)
ok back to topic. |

haha!!!
...but do you really think that that cat is a pure natural creature of God or has it been tampered with by humans.....(if that is possible, I know it is with dogs and plants, you know how they mix a little this and mix a little that to make the "perfect" breed?)
hehe..funny cat, I might have a heart attack to if I woke up and saw that ugly thing...but it would be worth the laughs...hehe |

Almost certainly. In fact by the bulging-eye expression I wouldn't be surprised if it was being tampered with right now. |
