I know that this is a subject often asked about, but I would like to know what is SECOND best certification to obtain.... considering CELTA is the most recognized. I am planning on teaching in SEA (Malaysia/Vietnam) and $2300cnd is out of my budget for the CELTA course. I don't want to take a useless weekend course, so I am looking for others that are as valuable as the CELTA.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks |

smooj, this is the newbie forum. No biting. Go flame me or something.
PhDs might not always be practical, but second fiddle to a CELTA course . . . .
Sorry not to be much help, but I can't say for certian. There was a cert course I knew in Japan-but it's only recognized in that country. Many educators in China (in the interior) are not aware such things exist.
Do be careful - there are tons of dodgy schools that offer these things. If you just want the piece of paper so that you get get a job, that's an option. But if you really want to learn how to teach, try to be picky. |

Look for one with 100+ hours of class time, including several hours of practice-teaching. I didn't do a CELTA (I got my TEFL cert. through ITC in Prague), and I don't think I'm any worse off for not having one.

Well actually I was thinking that if an MA is the best qualification to have then a PhD might be second best...

The Trinity is also well-known and recognized. Don`t do the week or weekend deals. You`d be better off making a certificate on your computer and save the $500 than take one of those. Follow D`s advice on the minimum standards for a TEFL. |

I did Trinity and I would definitely recommend it as being good prep for TESOL. There are two qualifications too a Cert and a later Diploma so you can boost yourself up later on if you are so inclined.
The only downside about the trinity for me is that I am doomed to carrying around an A3 size certificate with me for the rest of my life. Why A3 - and they spelt my name wrong on it!
The RSA certificate also has a good reputation though I'm not sure if you can get this outside the UK/Europe. Anyone know? |
