This week my school had its annual three day sports meeting - complete with Nuremberg/Olympic style opening ceremony.

Interesting, we had ours last week, same style. They 'recruited' me into doing the flag-marching along with the other teachers. Viva la communist country.

All very interesting, but when the games began I was rather uncomfortable at the sight of 12 year old students throwing up after they'd completed a 100m sprint

Oh yes, I saw that too. Although most of the students were over 15 and 16 years old, the 400m run took its toll. That particular sprint is brutal by any standards, but some of the students looked like they were about to die when they crossed the finish line.

Ah yes, the highly touted "sports day" at the local Chinese college. I think the theatre department is in charge of this spectacle as most of the participants are worthy of Oscar nominations--falling in a heap after crossing the finish line, the tears, the red faces, arms around friends shoulders to be carried off...

The LA center for the Chinese sounds just like the Mainland. Daily exercise and a mainly vegetable diet, but a non-chalant attitude about the pollution; chaos in the hallways; the chaos occasionally spilling into YOUR classroom. Once again, the Mainland in LA. Do the Chinese there yell "hello, hello, I love you?"
