I can tell you that I have worked there and they blow through alot of FTs and most have been cheated out of salary and bonuses due.
My friend finished his contract at King's in Quanzhou and they simply told him they decided not to give him the contract bonus... No reasons stated, no valid reason. They just decided to withhold the specified contract bonus.
Skip this place at all costs.... |
But if I only need the job for 3 months, would it be so bad? I won't give them notice therefore shouldn't be getting screwed on the pay. |

Ok, I have a grudge against King's...If you have not already guessed this.
If you go there and tell them you only want work for 2-3 months they will hire you and work with you. They do blow through alot of FTs but also hire for 1-2 months if that is all the FT wants to sign for.
So if you only want a short term contract make sure you tell them that and you also want to end your month close to the scheduled payday so they don't burn you for $$$ |

It is very simple:
1. Leave these crooks immediately.
2. Report them to the authorities after you have left China.
These crooks do deserve to be in real trouble and should never be able to trick in any foreign teacher. |

So I'm wondering... If people have reported the school as hiring illegaly, why are they still in business?
I can't imagine the inconvenience of having to travel to Hong Kong EVERY MONTH just to renew a visa! Would it not have been easier just to get an F visa?
I don't recall seeing many English teaching places in Xiamen. Perhaps it's time for some of you to get together and make your own company? It will be interesting to see how ethical people act when the money is there to tempt. I, personally, could never scam anyone like that. Jiminy Cricket is screaming too loudly in my ear for that! |

Dear Jeff,
Thank you for the warning. I appreciated it.
I am befuddled by all of Malsol's comments suggesting that we turn this forum over to the employers so that they can post "their side of things".
|
be befuddle-duddled no longer sir. hearing from both sides makes sense so as to know what really happened. the truth is usually in the middle somewhere. you wouldnt go into court expecting to hear only from the prosecution, would you? a few times in the past year, schools actually did post responses to warnings posted against them, and in those cases the school (usually foreign DOS) made a pretty good case against the teachers. FTs are not always right. and whoever started this thread sure didnt provide a lot of detail.

And TW, frankly, forgive me, your karma snippet was really not necessary. Never kick somebody when they are down and out -- because that ALSO goes around. Listen patiently and carefully and learn what they are saying.

while i do enjoy reading some of jeffs posts, he did admit to taking undeserved airfare money from a school in the past and had no qualms about it. this is no different than a school ripping off a FT. hear what i'm saying HFG?

| Well, there are places where teachers can post, namely greylists like TeflWatch. I personally would post my experience on a greylist. Anyways, teacher's need to start sticking up for teachers and it seems like whenever we see a negative report on a school, several people pop, unfamiliar with the situation, to say hey, it's the teacher's fault. |
teachers can stick up for teachers but if we hear both sides of a story in the same forum, maybe we'll find that the teachers are not always right. there are plenty of wanker FTs in china that dont deserve to have anyone stick up for them.

Actually, when i signed up to work at this school (that i ran from) I had no intention of leaving before the contract.
They offered to give me the airfare money up front, it was a surprise to me. If someone held out an envelope with 18 or 20 k red money in it wouldn't YOU take it? (Assuming he was not Lucifer or one of his minions...)
In a meeting they yelled at me and the fao chick said if I didn't like it I could leave (the school). And I did.
I EXPECT my employer to treat me with respect - if they don't - they yell at me, try to cheat me, or don't honor the contract, then if they open the door and say you can leave, then I will explore that option.
My curent employer is a company with 80,000 employees. I was hired by the #2 person in the company. In a meeting last week an hr person yelled at me and blamed me for something that I had nothing to do with. Then the training manager decided I was getting paid too much and decided to cut my salary by 20% in that meeting - even though I had a signed contract by the Exeutive VP, even though they provided the round trip air ticket from Florida to Hong Kong.
I held out my company ID card to the hr geek and said "You want it, take it." AFTER he told me I could leave if I didn't like it. After he said maybe I misunderstood that my "Probabtion Period" was 3 months before I recieved the full monthly salary... ( no mention of this in the contract)
That night I sent a long email to the EXE VP who was traveling in Europe on business. She replied quickly apoligising for the hr geek by saying he was young.
That was strike one, trust me. It's a big company and I expect to be treated correctly, if they can't or won't then my contract has a 7 day provision where I can give a weeks notice and leave. And I will if they can't conform to the standards that I believe I deserve... |

jeff, i know how some of these schools can be..... i dont disagree with you entirely. my comment regarding you taking that airfare money and not finishing the contract was aimed more at HLFGs comment to TW than it was at you.
at any rate, events such as you describe only back up the argument that its better to have the school respond to any allegation on these forums that they have cheated FTs. as it is the only ones that do respond are the occasional one that is run by a foreigner and who looks at whats written on forums like this.

Jeff.... I saw a "last week" in that post. Are you saying that this happened AGAIN?
Do you all think that companies do this by default then? I believe that this is partly why the "going rate" is so low.
You get one of the posters who want to know if they should be paying 20 k a month for a volunteer position... Add to that a dosage of never having done any research.. add a little bit of horniness and that = willingness to accept whatever the company offers at whatever cost.
It may be a slow process, but as soon as EVERYONE begins to stand up for themselves then the results will follow suit. Until then, expect to travel 4 hours to an interview to have them, with a straight face, offer you 80 RMB per hour. |

You read the quote correctly. LAST WEEK they, a young punk in the hr dept - yelled at me in a room full of people during a meeting. I have a similar meeting today and I can tell you that if it happens again I WILL PACK MY SHIIIIT and leave...
I give respect to those I work with and demand it in return.
btw, aren't you still in Xiamen? It says HOUSTON on your location... |
