| I am doing a one year contract in Korea currently, but I am interested in Japan. However, the contracts on offer for Japan seem to be far less money when one calculates the perks of a Korean contract. Following this contract, I will be returning to Canada to do an MA in English and I may also take some kind of TEFL or CELTA certification. With an MA, one year's experience, and a teaching certificate, is it possible to make equivalent money to Korea for a first timer in Japan? I have heard that private lessons in Japan is where the real filthy lucre lies. Can anyone enlighten me on this topic? |

I'd have to say no. Here in Japan, you are still going to have to start at the bottom, which means 250,000 yen/month (unless you get on the JET program next year, in which case salary is 300,000).
Want private lessons? Ok, but they are fickle and unstable, and it'll take time to get them. Plus, if you work in a conversation school, your hours are likely to be noonish to 9pm, so when could you teach? Your weekends may not even be 2 consecutive days in the beginning. Do you even have a business plan for teaching privately, or do you just think you'll jump in cold? |

| considering the strength of the won and the fact that you get free housing, plus the lower cost of living in Korea, plus the lower tax, you can save more money in Korea. |

You would likely be able to go back to Korea and work in a university, whereas as others have mentioned, you will be starting over in Japan. A non-related MA isn't going to be worth much for applying to universities in Japan with no prior experience and (I assume) no language ability in Japanese.
There are jobs availabe in Japan that will allow you to save as much as in Korea, but they tend to be hired from within the country and found through network contacts only. They also tend to require TEFL/TESOL/TESL qualifications and sometimes Japanese language ability as well. Also, in order to save a lot in Japan, you pretty much have to live out in the countryside. Same as anywhere, I guess. |
